Watch what you eat
Circle Cafe is launching the UAE’s first home-delivery tracking app for the Apple Watch. Called Watch Your Food, the app will be available from July and allows customers to check the status of their order, from preparation to delivery, after they have ordered through the website or smartphone app. Circle Cafe recently opened new outlets at Mangrove Village in Abu Dhabi and Bay Square in Dubai’s Business Bay, with others at Al Ain Mall and The Dubai Mall to follow soon.
Focus on diabetes
Lifecare Hospital has launched a diabetes campaign to help raise awareness of the condition and promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. In the UAE, 19 per cent of the population has diabetes, but many people are unaware of it. Dr Arun Menon, director of operations at Lifecare Hospital, Baniyas, says lack of awareness is the biggest risk factor associated with diabetes, especially among labourers, who are the target of the Living with Diabetes campaign. “Most of the people in these camps who have diabetes diagnosed are unaware of what to eat or avoid,” he says. “One of the key messages of the campaign is to raise awareness of how the healthy choice can be the easy choice.”
While the first phase of the programme focuses on awareness, the second phase will involve the set-up of a medical camp to identify people with diabetes. A diabetic club will be established in the third phase.
Nutrition first
Fitness First plans to introduce a nutrition programme, which includes a meal delivery service. Kicking off in early May, members can sign on for a minimum of five days and receive five meals each day (or six for athletes). Delivery will be available in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. Tastebuds in tune
The right music can put you in the mood for many things – dancing, sleeping and shopping. Now a study at the University of Oxford has proved that music can change the way you taste food. Professor Charles Spence, who researches multisensory perception, has discovered that certain music can enhance the taste of your food. For example, sourness works best with high-pitched tones, while sweetness prefers richer sounds and bitterness is best with deep tones. Spence has also studied the effects of the quality of cutlery, the colour of dishes and atmosphere on the enjoyment of food, and his advice has been sought by renowned chefs and restaurateurs, including Heston Blumenthal.

Know before you go
- Jebel Akhdar is a two-hour drive from Muscat airport or a six-hour drive from Dubai. It’s impossible to visit by car unless you have a 4x4. Phone ahead to the hotel to arrange a transfer.
- If you’re driving, make sure your insurance covers Oman.
- By air: Budget airlines Air Arabia, Flydubai and SalamAir offer direct routes to Muscat from the UAE.
- Tourists from the Emirates (UAE nationals not included) must apply for an Omani visa online before arrival at evisa.rop.gov.om. The process typically takes several days.
- Flash floods are probable due to the terrain and a lack of drainage. Always check the weather before venturing into any canyons or other remote areas and identify a plan of escape that includes high ground, shelter and parking where your car won’t be overtaken by sudden downpours.

Tips on buying property during a pandemic
Islay Robinson, group chief executive of mortgage broker Enness Global, offers his advice on buying property in today's market.
While many have been quick to call a market collapse, this simply isn’t what we’re seeing on the ground. Many pockets of the global property market, including London and the UAE, continue to be compelling locations to invest in real estate.
While an air of uncertainty remains, the outlook is far better than anyone could have predicted. However, it is still important to consider the wider threat posed by Covid-19 when buying bricks and mortar.
Anything with outside space, gardens and private entrances is a must and these property features will see your investment keep its value should the pandemic drag on. In contrast, flats and particularly high-rise developments are falling in popularity and investors should avoid them at all costs.
Attractive investment property can be hard to find amid strong demand and heightened buyer activity. When you do find one, be prepared to move hard and fast to secure it. If you have your finances in order, this shouldn’t be an issue.
Lenders continue to lend and rates remain at an all-time low, so utilise this. There is no point in tying up cash when you can keep this liquidity to maximise other opportunities.
Keep your head and, as always when investing, take the long-term view. External factors such as coronavirus or Brexit will present challenges in the short-term, but the long-term outlook remains strong.
Finally, keep an eye on your currency. Whenever currency fluctuations favour foreign buyers, you can bet that demand will increase, as they act to secure what is essentially a discounted property.

Studying addiction
This month, Dubai Medical College launched the Middle East’s first master's programme in addiction science.
Together with the Erada Centre for Treatment and Rehabilitation, the college offers a two-year master’s course as well as a one-year diploma in the same subject.
The move was announced earlier this year and is part of a new drive to combat drug abuse and increase the region’s capacity for treating drug addiction.

SUNDERLAND 2002-03
No one has ended a Premier League season quite like Sunderland. They lost each of their final 15 games, taking no points after January. They ended up with 19 in total, sacking managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson and losing 3-1 to Charlton when they scored three own goals in eight minutes.
SUNDERLAND 2005-06
Until Derby came along, Sunderland’s total of 15 points was the Premier League’s record low. They made it until May and their final home game before winning at the Stadium of Light while they lost a joint record 29 of their 38 league games.
HUDDERSFIELD 2018-19
Joined Derby as the only team to be relegated in March. No striker scored until January, while only two players got more assists than goalkeeper Jonas Lossl. The mid-season appointment Jan Siewert was to end his time as Huddersfield manager with a 5.3 per cent win rate.
ASTON VILLA 2015-16
Perhaps the most inexplicably bad season, considering they signed Idrissa Gueye and Adama Traore and still only got 17 points. Villa won their first league game, but none of the next 19. They ended an abominable campaign by taking one point from the last 39 available.
FULHAM 2018-19
Terrible in different ways. Fulham’s total of 26 points is not among the lowest ever but they contrived to get relegated after spending over £100 million (Dh457m) in the transfer market. Much of it went on defenders but they only kept two clean sheets in their first 33 games.

- not have been convicted of offences or crimes involving moral turpitude
- be free of infectious diseases or psychological and mental disorders
- have the ability to support its members and the foster child financially
- undertake to treat and raise the child in a proper manner and take care of his or her health and well-being
- A single, divorced or widowed Muslim Emirati female, residing in the UAE may apply to foster a child if she is at least 30 years old and able to support the child financially
