• Rosa Mexicano has launched a month-long taco festival to offer diners a new selection of tacos through March 15. The promotion includes the new cheese tacos, shrimp tacos, chicken tacos and braised short rib tacos. From Dh39 to Dh49 each. Rosa Mexicano has two locations: one in the Dubai Mall and one in Mirdif City Center. www.rosamexicano.com

• If you think Nando's is only for meat-lovers, think again. The restaurant, famous for its peri-peri chicken, has plenty of meat-free options to satisfy every vegetarian. Choose from peri-peri vegetables, hummus, salads, veggie pitas, veggie burgers and wraps — all drenched with your choice of the lemon & herb, mild, hot or extra hot peri-peri sauce. www.facebook.com/nandosuae

• Avec, the home-grown restaurant in Dubai Media City has just launched a new brunch. The brunch will offer bread, pastries, made-to-order eggs, pancakes, quiches and other baked items. Or create your own salad from Avec’s famous 5 metre long salad bar (believed to be the longest in the UAE). There are also lots of options from Big Mama’s Pot at Avec. Choose from dishes such as a classic French chicken fricassee or a Moroccan fish tagine. It’s an early brunch — from 11am to 3pm every Friday — and it’s a great deal at just Dh95 per person. Avec is located on the Ground Level of Al Thuraya Tower 2, next to Media One Hotel in Dubai Media City. For reservations, call 04 430 3700.

• We've just heard that Fume, the popular eatery in Pier 7 in Dubai Marina, is opening a second outlet in Manzil Downtown Dubai. The new location will include a large terrace and outdoor seating. The Fume at Pier 7 has also just launched a children's brunch from noon to 4pm every Friday for just Dh30. Fume offers food from around the world as well as meats smoked slow and low on site (they even serve sourdough bread with smoked butter and lava salt). Fume's downtown Dubai location is planned to open before the summer. www.fume-eatery.com

Top investing tips for UAE residents in 2021

Build an emergency fund: Make sure you have enough cash to cover six months of expenses as a buffer against unexpected problems before you begin investing, advises Steve Cronin, the founder of DeadSimpleSaving.com.

Think long-term: When you invest, you need to have a long-term mindset, so don’t worry about momentary ups and downs in the stock market.

Invest worldwide: Diversify your investments globally, ideally by way of a global stock index fund.

Is your money tied up: Avoid anything where you cannot get your money back in full within a month at any time without any penalty.

Skip past the promises: “If an investment product is offering more than 10 per cent return per year, it is either extremely risky or a scam,” Mr Cronin says.

Choose plans with low fees: Make sure that any funds you buy do not charge more than 1 per cent in fees, Mr Cronin says. “If you invest by yourself, you can easily stay below this figure.” Managed funds and commissionable investments often come with higher fees.

Be sceptical about recommendations: If someone suggests an investment to you, ask if they stand to gain, advises Mr Cronin. “If they are receiving commission, they are unlikely to recommend an investment that’s best for you.”

Get financially independent: Mr Cronin advises UAE residents to pursue financial independence. Start with a Google search and improve your knowledge via expat investing websites or Facebook groups such as SimplyFI.
