Supermarkets in Abu Dhabi will now have dedicated areas for local food and produce.

Thanks to a new initiative from Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA), under the directives of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Presidential Affairs, and Chairman of ADAFSA, all major supermarkets in the capital must allocate space to showcase goods grown and produced in the UAE.

It is hoped the move will allow producers across the UAE a place to market their goods, instead of relying on outside sources.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, said: “We support anything that facilitates, motivates and provides security.”

It means shoppers will be able to easily see which items have been produced locally, and allow them to choose produce and food items that support local makers and help ensure food security within the country.

Shoppers will also be able to order local produce to their homes via their local supermarkets, with many now offering enhanced delivery options due to the coronavirus pandemic.
