January has long been considered a month of change, when we get a chance to reflect and relax after the gluttony that comes with December. It’s no wonder, then, that for many, it’s also synonymous with Veganuary, an initiative that involves eschewing all meat and dairy products in favour of a plant-based diet.
Whether you’re doing it for health reasons, animal welfare or because you’re curious, it’s a great time to give veganism a go. To help you out, a number of UAE establishments introduce vegan menus, dishes and offers. Here’s a look at some to try.
Atlantis, The Palm
The hotel is going all out for Veganuary, with a number of its restaurants curating vegan menus for the month. Cantonese restaurant Hakkasan will serve vegetarian steamed dim sum and tofu, aubergine and shiitake hotpot, while Ronda Locatelli will offer new dishes such as vegan meatballs in tomato sauce, stuffed potato pasta with wild mushroom sauce and vegan chocolate cake.
British favourite Bread Street Kitchen will carve up a vegan Wellington served with a beetroot jus, and there's also the option of cauliflower steak with chimichurri. Meat will take a back seat even at Seafire Steakhouse, which has a vegan take on its popular short rib donuts, now called the Impossible donuts. Also expect warm mushroom bruschetta on toasted French loaf, meaty roasted cauliflower with corn succotash and an Impossible burger with juicy tomato salsa and fries.
Daily, until Monday, January 31; prices vary; Atlantis, The Palm; 04 426 2000; www.atlantis.com
Black Tap
The burger joint is proving that vegan menus don’t have to be boring, with some indulgent limited-time dishes. Available in locations across the UAE until Monday, January 31, visitors can enjoy guacamole and chips, chilli, salsa and sour cream-loaded Impossible chilli tacos, crispy Brussels sprouts and a quinoa-based kale, avocado and salsa verde-flecked craft salad.
The show-stopper for the month is a vegan truffle shroom burger featuring a black bean and mushroom patty with vegan potato roll and truffle porcini cream sauce. Wash it all down with a Black N White vegan cakeshake.

Veganuary at Expo 2020 Dubai
Considering that Expo 2020 Dubai is all about innovation and the future, it’s no wonder the place is brimming with Veganuary offers, from a vegan food festival to some plant-based burgers.

Know before you go
- Jebel Akhdar is a two-hour drive from Muscat airport or a six-hour drive from Dubai. It’s impossible to visit by car unless you have a 4x4. Phone ahead to the hotel to arrange a transfer.
- If you’re driving, make sure your insurance covers Oman.
- By air: Budget airlines Air Arabia, Flydubai and SalamAir offer direct routes to Muscat from the UAE.
- Tourists from the Emirates (UAE nationals not included) must apply for an Omani visa online before arrival at evisa.rop.gov.om. The process typically takes several days.
- Flash floods are probable due to the terrain and a lack of drainage. Always check the weather before venturing into any canyons or other remote areas and identify a plan of escape that includes high ground, shelter and parking where your car won’t be overtaken by sudden downpours.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.

Tearful appearance
Chancellor Rachel Reeves set markets on edge as she appeared visibly distraught in parliament on Wednesday.
Legislative setbacks for the government have blown a new hole in the budgetary calculations at a time when the deficit is stubbornly large and the economy is struggling to grow.
She appeared with Keir Starmer on Thursday and the pair embraced, but he had failed to give her his backing as she cried a day earlier.
A spokesman said her upset demeanour was due to a personal matter.
What are the main cyber security threats?
Cyber crime - This includes fraud, impersonation, scams and deepfake technology, tactics that are increasingly targeting infrastructure and exploiting human vulnerabilities.
Cyber terrorism - Social media platforms are used to spread radical ideologies, misinformation and disinformation, often with the aim of disrupting critical infrastructure such as power grids.
Cyber warfare - Shaped by geopolitical tension, hostile actors seek to infiltrate and compromise national infrastructure, using one country’s systems as a springboard to launch attacks on others.
Dust and sand storms compared
Sand storm
- Particle size: Larger, heavier sand grains
- Visibility: Often dramatic with thick "walls" of sand
- Duration: Short-lived, typically localised
- Travel distance: Limited
- Source: Open desert areas with strong winds
Dust storm
- Particle size: Much finer, lightweight particles
- Visibility: Hazy skies but less intense
- Duration: Can linger for days
- Travel distance: Long-range, up to thousands of kilometres
- Source: Can be carried from distant regions
Safety 'top priority' for rival hyperloop company
The chief operating officer of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Andres de Leon, said his company's hyperloop technology is “ready” and safe.
He said the company prioritised safety throughout its development and, last year, Munich Re, one of the world's largest reinsurance companies, announced it was ready to insure their technology.
“Our levitation, propulsion, and vacuum technology have all been developed [...] over several decades and have been deployed and tested at full scale,” he said in a statement to The National.
“Only once the system has been certified and approved will it move people,” he said.
HyperloopTT has begun designing and engineering processes for its Abu Dhabi projects and hopes to break ground soon.
With no delivery date yet announced, Mr de Leon said timelines had to be considered carefully, as government approval, permits, and regulations could create necessary delays.
Difference between fractional ownership and timeshare
Although similar in its appearance, the concept of a fractional title deed is unlike that of a timeshare, which usually involves multiple investors buying “time” in a property whereby the owner has the right to occupation for a specified period of time in any year, as opposed to the actual real estate, said John Peacock, Head of Indirect Tax and Conveyancing, BSA Ahmad Bin Hezeem & Associates, a law firm.
Benefits of first-time home buyers' scheme
- Priority access to new homes from participating developers
- Discounts on sales price of off-plan units
- Flexible payment plans from developers
- Mortgages with better interest rates, faster approval times and reduced fees
- DLD registration fee can be paid through banks or credit cards at zero interest rates
