The era of the Zoom earrings: why you'll be wearing plenty of oversized accessories next season

As our social interactions shrank to the size of our screens during the pandemic, it became irrelevant what was worn below chest level, but above the neckline, it was another matter.

Sales in beauty products soared and we all became adept at managing our own hair, but the best distraction were some Zoom-worthy earrings, especially for all those online parties.

It appears the fashion designers and their stylists spotted this, too, for there were some serious dazzlers on the virtual catwalks of London, New York and Milan. Prabal Gurung also happens to be creative director of pearl and diamond specialist Tasaki, and so his swishy tassel diamond earrings were for real.

Badgley Mischka's soignee evening gowns came with crystal tassel and fringe earrings, while Tom Ford’s status earrings were a modern statement constructed from abstract silhouettes of Perspex strung together with knotted gold thread.

The trend from now until autumn is definitely shoulder-grazers, with colourful pendula danglers spotted at Zimmermann with matching bracelets and necklaces, or simple but super-long gold chains at Ulla Johnson. Johnson toyed with asymmetric effects by varying the length of each earring to emphasise the hippie vibe of her 1970s bohemian look.

In London, Erdem is known for his love of eye-catching earrings, and elaborate vintage jewels added that extra bit of polish to his glamorous 1950s-style gowns.

Milliner Stephen Jones (who also collaborates with Dior, Alaia and Gaultier) produced a seductive collection of hats inspired by his love of Paris, and added spectacular chandelier earrings and sparkling necklaces created by Vicki Sarge that really jump through the screen. These would definitely pack a punch at a Zoom party.

In Milan, gold jewellery featured often and discreetly. However, earrings, once again, were a highlight with long gold foliage dusting shoulders at Valentino.

The famous double F logo at Fendi was interpreted as gold earrings by jewellery designer Delfina Delettrez Fendi, whereas Dolce & Gabbana characteristically blinged out on not only their logo earrings, but multicoloured ropes of necklaces, too.

With all this choice, frankly, there is no excuse not to dazzle, even from the comfort of your couch.
