French luxury house Louis Vuitton is the world's most-Googled fashion brand, a new study has revealed.

Conducted by Money.co.uk, the survey used Google data from the past 12 months to place Vuitton firmly at the number one spot for most searched-for brand with an impressive 47 countries worldwide, including the UAE, UK, Singapore, South Africa and Australia.

Founded in 1854, Louis Vuitton has enjoyed huge growth from its early days as a maker of high-end luggage to a modern powerhouse in the luxury fashion industry. Its women’s collections have been designed by Nicolas Ghesquiere since 2013, while the men’s collections came under the control of American designer Virgil Abloh in 2018.

At number two, bagging the most searches across 13 countries, is the Italian house of Gucci. The label, headed by Alessandro Michele, was the most searched-for brand in its native Italy, as well as in Japan, Greece and Colombia.

Next on the global list is Chanel, topping 12 nations globally. Founded by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel in 1910, and now headed by Virginie Viard, the French label is famous for its signature boucle tweed looks, as well as the fabled quilted 2.55 bag. With a huge following across predominately Asian countries, Chanel topped the list in Bali, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.

In a shift of pace, the next most-popular brand is Calvin Klein, bagging the top spot across 11 nations, including Chile, Russia, Barbados and Ukraine. As the makers of predominately athleisure, it's the only non-luxury house to make the top five.

It is followed by luxury watch brand Rolex, which scored highly in nine countries including Kenya, Cambodia and Israel, placing it at number five.

At number six is Coach, the Manhattan luxury leather goods label founded in the 1940s, topping search in South Korea and Saudi Arabia. Another American name, Tory Burch, came in at number seven, as the most-Googled brand in Jamaica and the Bahamas.

Storied Spanish leather house Loewe, meanwhile, is the most-Googled brand across North America, with both Canada and the US searching for it. The house has gained a much wider audience since the arrival of Jonathan Anderson as creative director in 2013, taking it from a respected but rather introspective house to the wider gaze.

In joint eighth spot is Valentino. Topping the search list in Romania and Croatia, the Italian label has been steadily gaining traction since the arrival of creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli in 2016.

The third brand tie in eighth position is Fendi, best-known for its Baguette bag and its use of fur. In a surprise turn, Prada did not make the year's top 10, topping search data in just one country, India.

Sukuk explained

Sukuk are Sharia-compliant financial certificates issued by governments, corporates and other entities. While as an asset class they resemble conventional bonds, there are some significant differences. As interest is prohibited under Sharia, sukuk must contain an underlying transaction, for example a leaseback agreement, and the income that is paid to investors is generated by the underlying asset. Investors must also be prepared to share in both the profits and losses of an enterprise. Nevertheless, sukuk are similar to conventional bonds in that they provide regular payments, and are considered less risky than equities. Most investors would not buy sukuk directly due to high minimum subscriptions, but invest via funds.
