Kendall Jenner is under fire for hosting a celebrity-packed Halloween-themed birthday party, taking the heat off her sister Kim Kardashian's 'tone deaf' island birthday celebrations last week.
Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Jenner threw herself a party with an A-list guest list, which included Palestinian model Fai Khadra, rappers The Weeknd and Saweetie, Justin Bieber, Winnie Harlow, Jaden Smith, Scott Disick and hairdresser to the stars, Jen Atkin.
Jenner turns 25 on Tuesday, November 3, but hosted the party at Harriet's Rooftop at 1 Hotel in West Hollywood over the weekend. She was dressed as a 1990s Pamela Anderson for the event.
Her star guests also made the effort when it came to their costumes. The Weeknd was dressed as Eddie Murphy's The Nutty Professor character, Sherman Klump, and Jenner crowned him "best dressed" on Instagram.
Saweetie was X-Men's Mystique, singer Doja Cat dressed as an America's Next Top Model-era Tyra Banks, Atkins was a Super Mario Brother and Khadra came as an alien. Jenner's younger sister, Kylie, was a king cobra, dressed in custom-made Thierry Mugler.
However, the model has been slammed for the number of guests at the party, who were visibly not wearing masks, nor social distancing. One photo being circulated shows Jenner blowing out the candles on her birthday cake, a hygiene misstep amid the pandemic.
"Kendall Jenner really threw a big party with all those celebrities without masks in the middle of a pandemic with a 'no social media' rule so people wouldn’t find out about it," tweeted Twitter user @jeonlvr, with four photos from the event.
One photo shows the message that had been circulated at the event, which read: "No social media: Take all of the photos you want, but please do not post on social media of any kind.”
However, the "no social media" rule has evidently been relaxed since the event, as Jenner herself has posted about it, as has The Weeknd, Kim Kardashian and Saweetie.
Since the event, Kris Jenner has spoken to SiriusXM's Andy Cohen Live to defend her daughter's party.
“We’re dealing with lots of people that have different opinions, and all we can do is live our lives the best way we know how and be responsible and do the right thing,” Jenner said. “And we’re doing that. And I think, I am very sensitive to what’s going on. Believe me, you know, I’ve really tried so hard. We are very lucky to work in an industry where we get tested once or twice a week.
"Everyone got tested before they walked in the door, and they had to wait a half an hour until the results were in," she said, adding that guests were also tested a few days before Halloween.
“So we are really responsible and we make sure that everyone in our family and our closest friends are tested religiously,” she added. “So we do what we can, we try to follow the rules. And then if people are commenting and they’re being critical, I can’t control that.”
The criticism came as the US recorded 75,888 new daily Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, November 3, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 9,108,353 and deaths to 229,442, with more than 944,000 cases in California.
