In a dramatic short film shot in and around Sharjah's abandoned Al Madam village, Amato Couture kicked off the inaugural Men's Arab Fashion Week on Thursday with the unveiling of its first men's collection.
The 13-piece capsule collection by Amato Couture's Filipino creative director Furne One featured all the signatures that have made the Dubai brand’s womenswear such a success – including a muted palette, ornate embroidery and embellishments.
Fellow Dubai-based Filipino designer Michael Cinco may also be better know for his couture gowns, but he showcased a men's line that was similarly rich in its use of luxe materials, sharp cuts and exquisite detailing.
While technically genderless, Lebanese label Boyfriend the Brand presented a line of stunningly simple pieces. The brand's founder, stylist and art director Amine Jreissati, served up voluminous playsuits, classic shirts, roomy trousers, tailored shorts, and T-shirts emblazoned with Arabic calligraphy, all conceptualised and produced in Beirut.
Also taking a gender-fluid approach to their collections were EGONlab and Anomalous, which is helmed by Rabih Rowell, one of the youngest creative directors and stylists in the Arab region. Born and raised in Lebanon, Rowell moved to Dubai in 2018, and launched his clothing line a year later at the age of 19.
Roni Helou displayed his customary edgy aesthetic, as did fellow Beirut resident Eric Mathieu Ritter, who founded clothing brand Emergency Room in 2018, in an attempt to inject ethical and sustainable practices into the fashion industry. The brand uses locally sourced vintage materials and dead-stock fabrics to create one-of-a-kind pieces.

Why your domicile status is important
Your UK residence status is assessed using the statutory residence test. While your residence status – ie where you live - is assessed every year, your domicile status is assessed over your lifetime.
Your domicile of origin generally comes from your parents and if your parents were not married, then it is decided by your father. Your domicile is generally the country your father considered his permanent home when you were born.

What is the definition of an SME?
SMEs in the UAE are defined by the number of employees, annual turnover and sector. For example, a “small company” in the services industry has six to 50 employees with a turnover of more than Dh2 million up to Dh20m, while in the manufacturing industry the requirements are 10 to 100 employees with a turnover of more than Dh3m up to Dh50m, according to Dubai SME, an agency of the Department of Economic Development.
A “medium-sized company” can either have staff of 51 to 200 employees or 101 to 250 employees, and a turnover less than or equal to Dh200m or Dh250m, again depending on whether the business is in the trading, manufacturing or services sectors.

The Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index
Mazen Abukhater, principal and actuary at global consultancy Mercer, Middle East, says the company’s Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index - which benchmarks 34 pension schemes across the globe to assess their adequacy, sustainability and integrity - included Saudi Arabia for the first time this year to offer a glimpse into the region.
The index highlighted fundamental issues for all 34 countries, such as a rapid ageing population and a low growth / low interest environment putting pressure on expected returns. It also highlighted the increasing popularity around the world of defined contribution schemes.
“Average life expectancy has been increasing by about three years every 10 years. Someone born in 1947 is expected to live until 85 whereas someone born in 2007 is expected to live to 103,” Mr Abukhater told the Mena Pensions Conference.
“Are our systems equipped to handle these kind of life expectancies in the future? If so many people retire at 60, they are going to be in retirement for 43 years – so we need to adapt our retirement age to our changing life expectancy.”
Saudi Arabia came in the middle of Mercer’s ranking with a score of 58.9. The report said the country's index could be raised by improving the minimum level of support for the poorest aged individuals and increasing the labour force participation rate at older ages as life expectancies rise.
Mr Abukhater said the challenges of an ageing population, increased life expectancy and some individuals relying solely on their government for financial support in their retirement years will put the system under strain.
“To relieve that pressure, governments need to consider whether it is time to switch to a defined contribution scheme so that individuals can supplement their own future with the help of government support,” he said.
