They will soon be spoilt with presents for their new arrival, and after the news broke that Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik are expecting their first child, the parents-to-be were sent a matching set of evil eye bracelets as a gift.

The couple were seen sporting the diamond-studded designs on Instagram, which were created by jeweller George Khalife, who chose to send the symbol due to his shared "Middle Eastern descent" with the Dutch-Palestinian model.

Khalife, who goes by the moniker George the Jeweller, said he was "so excited" to hear that Hadid, 25, and Malik, 27, were expecting their first child.

"I immediately thought to send them evil eyes," the celebrity jeweller told People magazine. "We are all of Middle Eastern descent and in our culture, evil eyes ward off jealously and negativity."

Malik is British-Pakistani: but the evil eye, or nazar, is also symbolic in the subcontinent.

The bracelets are made of 14 karat gold and diamonds, and retail on Khalife's website for $274.99 (Dh1,010). The evil eye symbol has been used for centuries as a way to ward off negativity and evil, and famous people such as Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, also wear the symbolic jewellery.

"Good vibes only for this beautiful couple," the jeweller wrote on Instagram, as he shared a picture of Malik and Hadid's wrists, sporting the delicate chains.

"I feel like times like these are just very emotional – there is so much going on," Khalife, 33, told Page Six. "They need to look at those bracelets as a reminder to not let the negative energy affect them."

The jeweller, who was born in Michigan, is the son of Walid Khalife, a Beirut-born jeweller who established Gold Corp, a wholesale and retail jewellery store in Detroit.

Khalife, 33, is junior vice president of Gold Corp, and has his own line of fine jewellery, creating bespoke pieces for celebrities such as Ashley Graham and Khloe Kardashian. He also runs the line House of Fine Gold together with singer and actress Christina Milian.

The jeweller has previously created another piece for Hadid, a diamond necklace that spells out the name Zayn.

The model confirmed her pregnancy to talk show host Jimmy Fallon this weekend, telling the TV personality the couple were “extremely happy and excited”.

In an interview recorded from her home in Pennsylvania, where she is isolating with Malik, her sister Bella and mother Yolanda, she said: "Obviously we wished we could have announced it on our own terms, but we are very excited and happy and grateful for everyone's well wishes."

Hadid said being in quarantine with her family was allowing her to feel every moment of her pregnancy. “It’s a nice silver lining to be able to be home and together and really experience it day by day,” she told Fallon.

Gigi and Malik have been in an on/off relationship since 2015. They broke up for a period in 2018, but it was confirmed they were back together in December 2019.
