From Julia Roberts to Michael B Jordan: Stars choose unexpected fashion designers at Golden Globes 2019

The Golden Globes may have wrapped up for another year, but the images of stars swishing through in fabulous gowns and sharply cut tuxedos will keep the fashion pack buzzing for weeks. Of course, aside from being a pat on the back for the industry, these events also serve to give fashion houses a platform to showcase their biggest and best creations, to entice and intoxicate a wider audience. As celebrities sweep down the red carpet, in yards of tulle, we the audience get to enjoy the rustle of satin vicariously with them. The only downside of such a spectacle (if indeed it can be seen as such) is that after the first 30 gowns, the dresses can start to look a little samey. After all, there are only so many ways to cut a fit and flare dress. Which is why it was so refreshing to see outfits by unexpected designers, who represent a break from the norm. Take Julia Roberts, for example. While almost every other woman wore a gown to the event, Roberts donned a skirted, asymmetric Stella McCartney jumpsuit. Admittedly, Roberts is acting royalty, and therefore can do no wrong, but she showed a willingness to step outside the box and picked something that is not predictable (the vintage Givenchy gown she wore to the 2001 Academy Awards is still held up as a high point). Another actress to go off-piste was Rachel Weisz, who wore Celine, the brand on everyone's lips of late, as it recently appointed Hedi Slimane as creative director. As the man behind the controversial reboot of Saint Laurent, Slimane is now trying to do the same with Celine, in a move that has half the fashion industry up in arms. So to see Weisz select one of his gowns was a welcome statement in itself. Another actress who wore Celine is Lucy Boynton, whose vintage-looking gold lamé dress caught everyone's eye. Lupita Nyong’o is another celebrity who went for broke, as she stepped out in a gown in a dazzling colour. Not only was her dress this year in a beaded cornflower blue, it was also Calvin Klein by Appointment. The smaller niche label has been trying to reposition itself by hiring ex-Dior creative Raf Simons in an attempt to make itself the new Gucci. Simons was given free reign to inject some much-needed verve into the house. Ultimately the experiment has failed, and Simons has left, but he would have still been in charge when this dress was chosen, and his legacy remains in the perfectly carved line that sweeps around Nyong’o. The best look, however, was Michael B Jordan, who wore a double-breasted tuxedo by Riccardo Tisci for Burberry. Another house with a new designer at the helm, Tisci has been tasked with revamping a brand that had settled into a very comfortable groove under previous head Christopher Bailey. Tisci's first fashion show for Burberry ran to an astonishing 134 looks, drawing the ever-acerbic Diet Prada to blast the designer for having a vision so insipid it took over a hundred looks to explain it.
