Elie Saab launches high-end watches inspired by evil eye

Lebanese fashion house Elie Saab is adding to its growing portfolio with a new line of luxury watches.

Launched on Thursday, the new range of 28 ladies' timepieces are Swiss-made, come with stainless steel casings and are scattered with diamonds.

Called Eayan (meaning 'see' in Arabic), the design is based on the evil eye, a recurring motif in Middle Eastern culture. The evil eye symbol has been used for centuries as a way to ward off negativity and evil, and famous people such as Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Gigi Hadid have also sported jewellery featuring the motif.

Measuring 23 millimetres by 40 millimetres, the elliptical Eayan watches are made of stainless steel, known for its hard-wearing properties, and either used as is or plated in gold.

Each is completed with studded "eyelashes" on one side of the case.

One watch comes with a double-shaded green dial, surrounded by 86 VS1 white diamonds on the face and bezel, with a steel and gold-plated bracelet.

Another comes with a deep blue dial that sits in perfect contrast to the steel bracelet, and also comes with 86 white VS1 diamonds around the dial and bezel.

A third is crafted in tones of burnished copper, with a black and burgundy face sitting next to a bracelet coated in pink gold. This, too, comes with the same quality and quantity of white diamonds.

This new range of watches is a welcome addition to the Saab stable. To date, the eponymous label already offers ready-to-wear, haute couture, perfume and, most recently, furniture.

It has also designed a series of apartments with property company Emaar, situated on the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai.

Employment lawyer Meriel Schindler of Withers Worldwide shares her tips on achieving equal pay

Do your homework
Make sure that you are being offered a fair salary. There is lots of industry data available, and you can always talk to people who have come out of the organisation. Where I see people coming a cropper is where they haven’t done their homework.

Don’t be afraid to negotiate

It’s quite standard to negotiate if you think an offer is on the low side. The job is unlikely to be withdrawn if you ask for money, and if that did happen I’d question whether you want to work for an employer who is so hypersensitive.

Know your worth
Women tend to be a bit more reticent to talk about their achievements. In my experience they need to have more confidence in their own abilities – men will big up what they’ve done to get a pay rise, and to compete women need to turn up the volume.

Work together
If you suspect men in your organisation are being paid more, look your boss in the eye and say, “I want you to assure me that I’m paid equivalent to my peers”. If you’re not getting a straight answer, talk to your peer group and consider taking direct action to fix inequality.

Essentials

The flights
Whether you trek after mountain gorillas in Rwanda, Uganda or the Congo, the most convenient international airport is in Rwanda’s capital city, Kigali. There are direct flights from Dubai a couple of days a week with RwandAir. Otherwise, an indirect route is available via Nairobi with Kenya Airways. Flydubai flies to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, via Entebbe in Uganda. Expect to pay from US$350 (Dh1,286) return, including taxes.
The tours
Superb ape-watching tours that take in all three gorilla countries mentioned above are run by Natural World Safaris. In September, the company will be operating a unique Ugandan ape safari guided by well-known primatologist Ben Garrod.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, local operator Kivu Travel can organise pretty much any kind of safari throughout the Virunga National Park and elsewhere in eastern Congo.

UAE cricketers abroad

Sid Jhurani is not the first cricketer from the UAE to go to the UK to try his luck.

Rameez Shahzad Played alongside Ben Stokes and Liam Plunkett in Durham while he was studying there. He also played club cricket as an overseas professional, but his time in the UK stunted his UAE career. The batsman went a decade without playing for the national team.

Yodhin Punja The seam bowler was named in the UAE’s extended World Cup squad in 2015 despite being just 15 at the time. He made his senior UAE debut aged 16, and subsequently took up a scholarship at Claremont High School in the south of England.
