In the past, Dubai resident Arwa Beig’s birthday used to be a lavish affair.
However, this year, Beig, who turned 20 on Wednesday, September 16, decided to go a very different route and launch a beauty initiative to give back to the community.
The Indian-American discovered her passion for make-up at a young age and is a certified make-up artist as well as a business management student. When her mother Zoha Beig was diagnosed with cervical cancer three years ago, she noticed how much her mother's mood changed for the better simply by applying make-up after chemotherapy sessions. The experience taught her the power cosmetics can have on one's self esteem.
“In today’s day and age, doctors and nurses are true living heroes. They work tirelessly and selflessly helping others. I wanted to celebrate them,” says Beig, who got the idea to do this during the quarantine period earlier this year.
“When I was at home all those months, make-up was like an escapism for me. Moreover, I kept reading the news and was wondering how doctors and nurses were doing. I wanted to do something that would make them feel better.”
After the sessions were over Beig treated the healthcare workers to a dinner out as well as an open air ticket to their home country. Beig says the entire initiative has been self-funded with money she has received and saved through her work.
She also says the entire process got rather emotional. “Some of them had tears in their eyes. It was just so lovely seeing how excited they were at the dinner, talking happily and taking selfies. I want to cherish that evening forever.”
The makeovers were clearly much appreciated too.
“The makeover was so gorgeously done that I felt like I jumped right out of a fairy tale,” says Dr Kadambari Ramani of Aster Clinic Dubai.
Meanwhile, nurse Ivy Blanco Hortilano, also of Aster Clinic Dubai, described it as a magical and memorable moment. “This is the first time in four years of being in Dubai, that I felt special and appreciated for what I’m doing as a nurse,” she said.
Now, Beig wants to turn the beauty initiative, which she's calling Arwa's Beauty Beliefs, into a monthly process. Next month, she plans on giving makeovers to patients who have recovered from Covid-19.
“It’s an initiative that allows me to combine my passion for beauty with my love for society. This is a small way to give back to a community that has given me so many benefits that now allow me to live a good and healthy life,” she adds.

This is Firth's pick and an ingredient he says, "gives you an instant cheesy flavour". He advises making your own cream cheese with it or simply using it to whip up a mac and cheese or wholesome lasagne. It's available in organic and specialist grocery stores across the UAE.
Seeds
"We've got a big jar of mixed seeds in our kitchen," Theasby explains. "That's what you use to make a bolognese or pie or salad: just grab a handful of seeds and sprinkle them over the top. It's a really good way to make sure you're getting your omegas."
Umami flavours
"I could say soya sauce, but I'll say all umami-makers and have them in the same batch," says Firth. He suggests having items such as Marmite, balsamic vinegar and other general, dark, umami-tasting products in your cupboard "to make your bolognese a little bit more 'umptious'".
Onions and garlic
"If you've got them, you can cook basically anything from that base," says Theasby. "These ingredients are so prevalent in every world cuisine and if you've got them in your cupboard, then you know you've got the foundation of a really nice meal."
Your grain of choice
Whether rice, quinoa, pasta or buckwheat, Firth advises always having a stock of your favourite grains in the cupboard. "That you, you have an instant meal and all you have to do is just chuck a bit of veg in."

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

- A coffin lid dating back to 664BC-332BC was offered for sale by a Colorado-based art dealer, with a starting price of $65,000
