He could always be relied upon for a pithy one-liner, and Prince Philip's sense of occasion was equally as dependable.
The Duke of Edinburgh, who died on Friday aged 99, attended thousands of engagements, state dinners and ceremonial affairs during his decades of service.
And, whatever the event, the royal always put his best foot forward.
Whether donning official robes for the annual Order of the Garter ceremony or sporting laid-back separates for sunny overseas tours, the duke had a look appropriate for every occasion.
Demonstrating the timelessness of classic British tailoring, Prince Philip was a reported client of ateliers on London's famous Savile Row, such as Gieves & Hawkes.
His longtime tailor John Kent was behind the fit of most of his well-cut suits, while traditional kilts, often worn during jaunts to Scotland, came courtesy of Kinloch Anderson.
The royal also proudly wore his full naval uniform on many occasions, after serving in the Royal Navy during the Second World War.
As a keen sportsman, he could also be spied in polo gear or sailing attire from time to time.

The rules on fostering in the UAE
A foster couple or family must:
- be Muslim, Emirati and be residing in the UAE
- not be younger than 25 years old
- not have been convicted of offences or crimes involving moral turpitude
- be free of infectious diseases or psychological and mental disorders
- have the ability to support its members and the foster child financially
- undertake to treat and raise the child in a proper manner and take care of his or her health and well-being
- A single, divorced or widowed Muslim Emirati female, residing in the UAE may apply to foster a child if she is at least 30 years old and able to support the child financially
Know before you go
- Jebel Akhdar is a two-hour drive from Muscat airport or a six-hour drive from Dubai. It’s impossible to visit by car unless you have a 4x4. Phone ahead to the hotel to arrange a transfer.
