Karl Lagerfeld was rarely seen without two things – his signature look, or his beloved cat Choupette. And it has now emerged that the white, long-haired Burman, will inherit part of his $200m fortune.
The legendary designer died in Paris on Tuesday at the age of 85. Since news of his death broke, there has been much speculation about what would happen to Choupette, the cat which was given to Lagerfeld in 2012 and remained by his side ever since.
In an interview last year, Lagerfeld told French magazine Numero that Choupette would be named in his will, but added: "Don't worry, there is enough for everyone".
The inheritance will add to Choupette’s reputation as the most pampered puss in the business, with the feline reportedly already siting on a fortune of $3m, thanks to a number of lucrative modelling deals.
Choupette has also amassed a social media following of 255,000 thanks to Instagram account Choupette’s Diary, which yesterday paid tribute to ‘daddy’ Lagerfeld.
“Thank you everyone for your words of condolence. With a once cold but now simply broken heart, I am going into mourning,” the post reads, alongside a crying cat emoji. “I pray that your kind words and well-wishes will help me to put my best paw forward in my future without Daddy @KarlLagerfeld & as my own woman.”
Choupette joins hundreds of mourners around the world in paying tribute to Lagerfeld, the creative director of Chanel and Fendi. While his cause of death is yet to be confirmed, it is thought he had been unwell for some time, after he missed the final bow of his two Chanel shows at Paris Haute Couture week.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Chanel described Lagerfeld as an "extraordinary creative individual" with an "endless imagination".
