Today, Amazon has announced the launch of Amazon.sa, a dedicated online store for customers in Saudi Arabia.

Shoppers in Saudi will be able to browse and buy products from both local and international businesses, including products from Amazon US.

So far, the site has a total of 34 categories, including supermarket and grocery items, fashion products, electrical, beauty and cosmetics, home appliances and books.

Is Amazon.sa in Arabic or English?

The Amazon.sa site offers Arabic and English, on both the shopping app and on the website. It will also offer customer support in both languages.

Is there next-day delivery?

Amazon.sa will offer free next day delivery on orders above SAR 200 (Dh195). In selected areas of Saudi Arabia, there will also be an option of paid same-day delivery.

Amazon will continue to work with Saudi Post to fulfil deliveries in the country.

Does Souq.com still exist in Saudi?

All Souq.com customers in the kingdom will now be automatically redirected to the Amazon.sa store. Amazon acquired Souq in 2017.

"All existing Souq.com customer credentials, wish lists, orders, delivery addresses, payment methods and customer support queries have been converted to new Amazon.sa accounts," Amazon said a statement.

Do I need to re-download the app?

No, there is no need to download a new app for the Saudi Arabia store. Customers who already have the Amazon app can change to the Saudi Arabia in settings, under "Country & Language" to browse the kingdom's store. In the same settings section, you can move between Arabic and English languages.

Is Amazon Prime available in Saudi?

Amazon Prime, which is on offer in the UAE, is not yet available in Saudi.

A representative for Amazon told The National: "We're constantly working on adding and improving services for our customers, but have nothing to announce currently regarding Amazon Prime."

Amazon Prime is a paid-for subscription service, which offers free next-day delivery on selected products, video and gaming streaming, and access to Amazon Prime Day, a 48-hour sale that gives members access exclusive discounts. In the UAE, Amazon Prime membership costs Dh16 for the month or Dh140 for the year, and the site also offers a 30-day free trial.

What about sales?

The last big sale, Amazon Prime Day, was held globally in July 2019. Dates for the 2020 event have not been announced yet, but it is expected to be held a little later this year. Reuters has speculated it will be held in September 2020.

How to improve Arabic reading in early years

One 45-minute class per week in Standard Arabic is not sufficient

The goal should be for grade 1 and 2 students to become fluent readers

Subjects like technology, social studies, science can be taught in later grades

Grade 1 curricula should include oral instruction in Standard Arabic

First graders must regularly practice individual letters and combinations

Time should be slotted in class to read longer passages in early grades

Improve the appearance of textbooks

Revision of curriculum should be undertaken as per research findings

Conjugations of most common verb forms should be taught

Systematic learning of Standard Arabic grammar

Dirham Stretcher tips for having a baby in the UAE

Selma Abdelhamid, the group's moderator, offers her guide to guide the cost of having a young family:

• Buy second hand stuff

They grow so fast. Don't get a second hand car seat though, unless you 100 per cent know it's not expired and hasn't been in an accident.

• Get a health card and vaccinate your child for free at government health centres

Ms Ma says she discovered this after spending thousands on vaccinations at private clinics.

• Join mum and baby coffee mornings provided by clinics, babysitting companies or nurseries.

Before joining baby classes ask for a free trial session. This way you will know if it's for you or not. You'll be surprised how great some classes are and how bad others are.

• Once baby is ready for solids, cook at home

Take the food with you in reusable pouches or jars. You'll save a fortune and you'll know exactly what you're feeding your child.

The smuggler

Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.

Khouli conviction

Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

For sale

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
