Prince William's patient dies on his last shift with air ambulance

A woman, who was flown to hospital by the Duke of Cambridge on his last shift with the Air Ambulance service, has died from her injuries sustained when she was hit by a marked police van.

Prince William, who worked for the East Anglian Air Ambulance service, flew the woman from Hethel, Norfolk to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge on Thursday evening.

Police said that the woman, who was in her 50s, died on Saturday morning.

William retired from the Air Ambulance on Thursday in order to focus on his royal duties.

The father-of-two said he had witnessed "appalling tragedies" during his two years with the service.

In an editorial reflecting on his career in local newspaper The Eastern Daily Press published earlier this week, he wrote: "As a team, we travel to some very daunting incidents and we have been through some incredibly tough times together, witnessing some appalling tragedies."

The second in line to the British throne paid tribute to his colleagues who he said he had been "proud" to serve with.

He added: "As I hang up my flight suit, I am proud to have served with such an incredible team of people, who save lives across the region every day."

William will be taking on more duties on behalf of his grandparents the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, who are both nonagenarians.
