Sheikha Jawaher Al Thani, the wife of Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Al Thani, on Tuesday accompanied her husband to Spain, her first official overseas trip.
Sheikh Tamim and the first lady were greeted at the Royal Palace in Madrid by Spain's King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.
The Spanish royal couple hosted a lunch banquet in honour of the Qatari visit.
The Qatari couple also attended an official gala dinner hosted by King Felipe and Queen Letizia.
King Felipe presented Sheikh Tamim with the Queen Isabella Necklace, the highest decoration granted to heads of state and other prominent visitors.
Sheikha Jawaher was presented the Royal Order of Isabella by Queen Letizia.
In a speech before the dinner, Sheikh Tamim expressed his keenness to continue supporting and strengthening the ties between the two countries.
Qatar and Spain will celebrate this year the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, he said.
Qatar will add 4.7 billion euros ($4.9 billion) to its investment in Spain, betting on the “soundness” of the Spanish economy, he said, without specifying a time frame.
Qatar had direct investments in Spain worth 2.7 billion euros as of December 2019, Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said.
The Gulf state's sovereign funds have invested in companies such as Iberdrola, Santander and Prisa, he said.
