Samsung Electronics has maintained its status as the world's top smartphone vendor as the industry's shipments jumped 8 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2024, driven by improved consumer sentiment and macroeconomic conditions, a new report has shown.
The growth in the three months to the end of June marked the third consecutive quarter of expansion for the global smartphone market, Counterpoint Research said in its quarterly update on Friday.
Samsung, the world's biggest mobile phone manufacturer, cornered 19 per cent of shipments during the quarter, driven by the strong performance of its mid-tier Galaxy A series and continued popularity of its flagship Galaxy S24 line-up, the Hong Kong-based research firm said.
The Seoul-based company also has the opportunity to maintain or even build on to its lead with last month's launch of its newest Galaxy Z foldable smartphones.
Apple came in second with a 16 per cent market share. The world's most valuable company, whose latest generation of flagships is the iPhone 15 series, is widely expected to unveil its next iPhones in September. They are anticipated to feature the new Apple Intelligence platform.
China's Xiaomi was a close third with a 15 per cent market share and posted the best annual shipment growth of 27 per cent. Rounding out the top five were Oppo and Vivo, which each had a 9 per cent share.
Global smartphone revenue also grew 8 per cent annually during the three-month period, with Apple leading with a 42 per cent share, as the market's average selling prices climbed to their highest second-quarter levels, the report said.
California-based Apple also led revenue in the first quarter of 2024 with an almost identical 41 per cent share, when global revenue hit a new high.
The growth of the smartphone market was reflected in improved consumer sentiment in several European markets, particularly in Western Europe, which grew faster than Central and Eastern Europe, Counterpoint said. Both Europe and the Asia-Pacific region registered double-digit growth.
In the Middle East and Africa, shipments posted single-digit growth, driven by a more favourable economic environment, as well as an increasing push from Chinese brands, it added.
“Smartphone shipments registered strong growth as key regions continued on a recovery path,” Prachir Singh, a senior analyst at Counterpoint, wrote in the report.
“The Caribbean and Latin America emerged as the fastest-growing region as Chinese OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] continued their aggressive push, helped by increased demand in smaller markets in the region.”
Smartphones are the most popular consumer electronics devices. The industry has slowed down in the past two years due to factors including supply chain issues, high inflation and consumers holding off on upgrading their devices.
However, the upturn is being fuelled by the growth of emerging market economies, a resurgence in consumer spending, an increase in average selling prices and the swift integration of generative artificial intelligence devices.
The share of smartphones powered by generative AI is projected to hit 18 per cent in 2024, with these devices the “perfect platform for making AI accessible to everyone”, said Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint.
“Generative AI … is revolutionising smartphones. It offers personalised experiences, enhances existing features and allows for more intuitive interactions,” he said.
“In terms of shipments, we see a gradual recovery for the global smartphone market. The ongoing premiumisation trend, coupled with the AI trend, is likely going to push up the [average selling prices] and revenues in the coming quarters.”

Muslim Council of Elders condemns terrorism on religious sites
The Muslim Council of Elders has strongly condemned the criminal attacks on religious sites in Britain.
It firmly rejected “acts of terrorism, which constitute a flagrant violation of the sanctity of houses of worship”.
“Attacking places of worship is a form of terrorism and extremism that threatens peace and stability within societies,” it said.
The council also warned against the rise of hate speech, racism, extremism and Islamophobia. It urged the international community to join efforts to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

Where to donate in the UAE
You can donate to several registered charities through a “donation catalogue”. The use of the donation is quite specific, such as buying a fan for a poor family in Niger for Dh130.
The General Authority of Islamic Affairs & Endowments
The site has an e-donation service accepting debit card, credit card or e-Dirham, an electronic payment tool developed by the Ministry of Finance and First Abu Dhabi Bank.

Beit Al Khair Society has the motto “From – and to – the UAE,” with donations going towards the neediest in the country. Its website has a list of physical donation sites, but people can also contribute money by SMS, bank transfer and through the hotline 800-22554.
Dar Al Ber Society, which has charity projects in 39 countries, accept cash payments, money transfers or SMS donations. Its donation hotline is 800-79.
Dubai Cares provides several options for individuals and companies to donate, including online, through banks, at retail outlets, via phone and by purchasing Dubai Cares branded merchandise. It is currently running a campaign called Bookings 2030, which allows people to help change the future of six underprivileged children and young people.
Those who travel on Emirates have undoubtedly seen the little donation envelopes in the seat pockets. But the foundation also accepts donations online and in the form of Skywards Miles. Donated miles are used to sponsor travel for doctors, surgeons, engineers and other professionals volunteering on humanitarian missions around the world.
On the Emirates Red Crescent website you can choose between 35 different purposes for your donation, such as providing food for fasters, supporting debtors and contributing to a refugee women fund. It also has a list of bank accounts for each donation type.
Gulf for Good raises funds for partner charity projects through challenges, like climbing Kilimanjaro and cycling through Thailand. This year’s projects are in partnership with Street Child Nepal, Larchfield Kids, the Foundation for African Empowerment and SOS Children's Villages. Since 2001, the organisation has raised more than $3.5 million (Dh12.8m) in support of over 50 children’s charities.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the Noor Dubai Foundation a decade ago with the aim of eliminating all forms of preventable blindness globally. You can donate Dh50 to support mobile eye camps by texting the word “Noor” to 4565 (Etisalat) or 4849 (du).

Araminta Robertson, of the Financially Mint blog, shares her financial advice for university leavers:
1. Build digital or technical skills: After graduation, people can find it extremely hard to find jobs. From programming to digital marketing, your early twenties are for building skills. Future employers will want people with tech skills.
2. Side hustle: At 16, I lived in a village and started teaching online, as well as doing work as a virtual assistant and marketer. There are six skills you can use online: translation; teaching; programming; digital marketing; design and writing. If you master two, you’ll always be able to make money.
3. Networking: Knowing how to make connections is extremely useful. Use LinkedIn to find people who have the job you want, connect and ask to meet for coffee. Ask how they did it and if they know anyone who can help you. I secured quite a few clients this way.
4. Pay yourself first: The minute you receive any income, put about 15 per cent aside into a savings account you won’t touch, to go towards your emergency fund or to start investing. I do 20 per cent. It helped me start saving immediately.
