Mention Sarajevo and it is likely images of its four-year siege from 1992 during the Bosnian war stream through the head. But the capital city is trying hard to shed these images as it woos foreign investment.

Airport: Sarajevo International Airport (Iata code: SJJ) opened in 1969. Increase in traffic and the Winter Olympic Games of 1984 led to an expansion. The airport underwent a round of extensive renovation after the Bosnian war when it reopened to public in 1996. The airport has one terminal.

A conference centre: The Sarajevo School of Science and Technology has three auditoriums, four central indoor amphitheatres and two outdoor amphitheatres along with a helipad. The centre has the capacity to host small groups in its 40 classrooms and 200 people in the auditoriums.
A power restaurant: Kibe is located on Vrbanjuša and offers views over Sarajevo besides Bosnian dishes and grilled lamb. Prices can range from US$20 (Dh73) to $27.

Main businesses in town: Few of the heavy industries of the Communist period survived the test of time. The current sectors that contribute to the GDP include production and processing of food and beverages, tobacco and chemical products, electric machines, textile production and construction. Companies in town include BH Airlines, the pharmaceutical company Bosnalijek and Sarajevo Tobacco Factory, which produces cigarettes.

What is Financial Fair Play?
Introduced in 2011 by Uefa, European football’s governing body, it demands that clubs live within their means. Chiefly, spend within their income and not make substantial losses.
What the rules dictate?
The second phase of its implementation limits losses to €30 million (Dh136m) over three seasons. Extra expenditure is permitted for investment in sustainable areas (youth academies, stadium development, etc). Money provided by owners is not viewed as income. Revenue from “related parties” to those owners is assessed by Uefa's “financial control body” to be sure it is a fair value, or in line with market prices.
What are the penalties?
There are a number of punishments, including fines, a loss of prize money or having to reduce squad size for European competition – as happened to PSG in 2014. There is even the threat of a competition ban, which could in theory lead to PSG’s suspension from the Uefa Champions League.
$1,000 award for 1,000 days on madrasa portal
Daily cash awards of $1,000 dollars will sweeten the Madrasa e-learning project by tempting more pupils to an education portal to deepen their understanding of math and sciences.
School children are required to watch an educational video each day and answer a question related to it. They then enter into a raffle draw for the $1,000 prize.
“We are targeting everyone who wants to learn. This will be $1,000 for 1,000 days so there will be a winner every day for 1,000 days,” said Sara Al Nuaimi, project manager of the Madrasa e-learning platform that was launched on Tuesday by the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, to reach Arab pupils from kindergarten to grade 12 with educational videos.
“The objective of the Madrasa is to become the number one reference for all Arab students in the world. The 5,000 videos we have online is just the beginning, we have big ambitions. Today in the Arab world there are 50 million students. We want to reach everyone who is willing to learn.”

How has net migration to UK changed?

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
