Abu Dhabi Ports said on Tuesday it would donate a warehouse to Emirates Red Crescent in an effort to help families across the UAE.
The port operator signed a memorandum of understanding with Emirates Red Crescent to provide a 550 square metres space in Zayed Port, dubbed the “Warehouse of Giving”, after 2017 was declared as the “Year of Giving”, according to Mohammed Al Falahi, the secretary-general of Emirates Red Crescent.
“The memorandum reflects the will of both sides to coordinate efforts and activate cooperation venues to offer humanitarian and charitable work,” he said.
This year’s theme has three key targets including corporate social responsibility, volunteering and serving the nation. The policies have been set out to lay the framework for philanthropy through initiatives across the country.
Abu Dhabi Ports’ offering will fall in line with its corporate social responsibility. And to put it into perspective, warehouse rentals of the same size average about Dh180,000 annually on property sites such as dubizzle.
Zayed Port is the oldest commercial port in Abu Dhabi that handles general and bulk cargo as well as cruise tourism. Mr Al Falahi said the facility offers logistics support that Emirates Red Crescent needs for its services.
Sultan Al Shehi, an Emirates Red Crescent project manager, said the port operator was the first company to donate such a facility to the charity.
“The warehouse will be dedicated to storing donated furniture after revamping and repackaging it,” said Mr Al Shehi. “We expect to provide furniture for more than 1,000 families in need this year all over the country.”

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
