ABU DHABI// More than 250,000 tourists from around the world have visited the Sir Bani Yas Island nature reserve since it opened six years ago.
The 87-square kilometre island off the coast of the Western region of Abu Dhabi is expected to see an increase in visitors numbers as a range of new activities are introduced.
“Today, we’re proud of what we have achieved on the island – making it one of the most attractive places to visit in the region,” said Ali Majed Al Mansoori, chairman of the Tourism Development Investment Company.
“It has become a destination of choice as it brings a different kind of travel experience to Abu Dhabi, and one that puts the emirate alongside top leading tourism destinations in the world.”
The new attractions include a daily falconry demonstration introducing people to an important feature of Emirati heritage.
Land-sailing sessions allowing people to negotiate the varied terrain on the island and camping excursions are also now available.
Existing activities include a nature and wildlife drive through the 4,100 hectare Arabian Wildlife Park, which is home to over 13,000 free-roaming animals including Oryx, gazelles, deer, ostriches, giraffes and cheetahs.
There are also nature walks, mountain bike riding and horseback riding.
The Desert Islands Watersports Centre also offers activities like snorkeling, diving deep sea fishing and sea kayaking.
Boat owners can dock their craft at the Royal Bay Moorings, which has space for boats of 50 feet.
Guests also have the option of three five-star hotel resorts.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
