Emirati students will be taught how to market the capital as a tourist destination this summer.
The Tourism Youth Summer Camp will be for pupils between the ages of 15 to 17 and will run from August 15 to September 8.
Abu Dhabi Tourism and Cultural Authority organises the annual camp as a way to inform students about potential careers in the tourism industry.
“This year the programme takes in many new aspects of the destination, reflecting the [evolution] of Abu Dhabi’s tourism proposition,” said Nasser Al Reyami, director of tourism standards at the authority.
“We encourage nationals – boys and girls – to sign up for the three-week programme to get a better understanding of the industry, its role and goals and its impact on the local society.”
The camp will be held at the Yas Rotana Hotel on Yas Island and is being supported by the European International College.
Pupils will learn about the marketing campaign being developed for Yas Island and the new Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau.
There will be workshops about preservation and the promotion of UAE culture and heritage.
Chef Khulood Atiq, who specialises in Emirati and Arabic cuisine, will explain how food can play a part in attracting tourists.
“The students will get to meet airline and tour-operator representatives for the inside story on their role in the tourism food chain. This will be complemented by a visit to Etihad Airways’ headquarters,” Mr Al Reyami said.
“We’ll introduce them to sports tourism as well with visits to the Yas Marina Circuit and Yas Links golf course. They will be given an overview of events and attractions in the emirate and the role they play in attracting visitors.”
The students will also be advised about self-employment and the benefits offered by the Khalifa Fund to sustain projects.

Studying addiction
This month, Dubai Medical College launched the Middle East’s first master's programme in addiction science.
Together with the Erada Centre for Treatment and Rehabilitation, the college offers a two-year master’s course as well as a one-year diploma in the same subject.
The move was announced earlier this year and is part of a new drive to combat drug abuse and increase the region’s capacity for treating drug addiction.
