The high society London address with Harrods and a Dh67m price tag

Luxury residential properties in London have skyrocketed in price in recent years, but it’s still an eye-opener when a three-bedroom apartment goes on the market for £11.75m (Dh67.4m).

That’s what you will pay to live in a 3,839 square feet home at Five&Six Connaught Place, a pair of Graded II-listed former Georgian Townhouses that have been converted into seven ‘ultra-prime’ apartments containing two, three and four bedrooms, as well as some duplexes.

The biggest property, a 6,251 sq ft duplex with its own private courtyard and gardens, is expected to fetch £20m.

If you’re paying those kinds of prices, you expect something special. Fortunately, at this development you get it.

Because as well as luxury accommodation, buyers can also have all their personal needs catered to by staff from Harrods.

Short of your favourite caviar? Harrods staff will deliver it instantly; need a helicopter at short notice? No problem, Harrods will book it.

Connaught Place itself was built as a group of 13 mansions between 1807-1812 by architect Graham Taylor and was named after the Earl of Connaught - great-Grandson of King George II.

Although Five&Six spent some time as offices, they have recently been converted back into apartments by UK housebuilder Redrow Homes.

The buildings feature grand external entrances and spacious entrance halls decked with chandeliers and large staircases (although private lift lobbies are available).

Apartments benefit from the same sense of openness and grandeur, with ceiling heights of up to 14ft and large, traditional sash windows.

Interiors are finished to a high standard, with Italian marble, stone and wood used throughout. Each home has its own entrance hall with hand-laid parquet flooring and wood-panelled walls. They all have a reception room and a large dining area capable of seating 12-14 people. Most also have a study, and master bedrooms all have their own entrance foyer, walk-in dressing room and an ensuite, spa-style bathroom.

Q&A

Why are these homes so expensive?

Partly due to its location. Not only does its Bayswater address offer serenity, overlooking Hyde Park, but also convenience. It is just a couple of minutes’ walk from Marble Arch, shopping on Oxford and Regent Street and Grosvenor Square. And of course Harrods is just a stroll away across Hyde Park. Though with your own delivery service, you won’t need to bother.

Is that it?

No. As well as the features already mentioned, the homes will have kitchen and breakfast rooms designed by Robert Timmons with Marrion Cohiba granite worktops, and a central island made from rough-cut, fumed oak. Some of the properties will also have gymnasiums, steam rooms and saunas as well as private cinemas. All will have home entertainment systems by Harris Grant.

Any other notable features?

Connaught Place is steeped in history. It was once home to the wife of King George III’s son, Lady Augusta Murray. Aristocrats including the Earls of Lindsay and Dukes of Cleveland also lived there, and the street was also home to Lord Randolph Churchill, whose son Sir Winston Churchill (Britain’s wartime prime minister) grew up there. “These residences overlook Hyde Park and are six windows across providing exceptional lateral living space rarely found in the local area,” says Redrow London’s managing director, James Moody. “We have built exceptional homes behind retained Georgian facades sold on a highly sought-after share of the freehold basis.”

The smuggler

Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.

Khouli conviction

Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

For sale

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
