Tesla’s Elon Musk keeps getting the green light to do what it takes to bring electric cars to the masses, regardless of how much it’s going to cost.
The company burned through US$1.16 billion in cash during the second quarter by spending on capacity for its cheapest model yet and boosting battery output. Investors fixated instead on what Mr Musk said is coming next: hundreds of thousands of Model 3 saloon deliveries, installations of solar roofs and an all-new semi-truck to add to the line up.
“This is the best I’ve ever felt about Tesla’s future,” Mr Musk said. The company’s stock rose 7.4 per cent to $350.13 after the close of regular trading.
The chief executive has built a fanatical following of Tesla shareholders who continue to throw their support behind his clean-energy vision. It helps that consumers keep opening their wallets: the Model 3, which starts at $35,000, has racked up nearly half a million reservations and is drawing more deposits by the day.
“As long as they can continue executing on the growth trajectory, they won’t have trouble raising additional capital,”said Joe Dennison, an associate portfolio manager of Zevenbergen Capital Investments in Seattle. “It’s all about the Model 3 now.”
The record negative free cash flow Tesla reported for the three months ended in June was almost double the $622 million it went through in the first quarter. With a little more than $3bn in cash on hand, Mr Musk said the company is thinking about raising money through a debt offering.
“He’s going to need capital,” said Ross Gerber, the chief executive of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth & Investment Management, which holds Tesla shares. “That’s the one part of the financials that are a little bit troubling. To underestimate the cash burn over the next six months will be a mistake.”
Tesla has had little trouble drawing investor interest in funding Mr Musk’s ambitions, with optimism about the Model 3’s prospects contributing to a 53 per cent jump in its stock price this year.
Musk handed over the first 30 Model 3 saloons to employees on Friday. Tesla’s goal is to build 100 of the cars in August and more than 1,500 by September, then ramp up to a targeted rate of 20,000 a month by the end of the year.
The company has about 455,000 net reservations for the car, according to Mr Musk. He said he misspoke when he said on Friday that the count was at more than half a million. He described plans to quickly ramp up output of the Model 3 as “production hell” for workers at Tesla’s lone car assembly plant in Fremont, California.
“They should go back to the capital markets right now, when all the press on the vehicle is positive,” said David Kudla, the chief investment strategist at Mainstay Capital Management, which does not hold Tesla shares. “They need to raise at least $1bn. The production hell could be worse than Musk is letting on.”
Since the handover event, Tesla said it is averaging more than 1,800 net Model 3 reservations per day. The company also sought to alleviate concerns that interest in the car could sap demand for the pricier vehicles in the lineup. It expects to deliver more Model S and Model X vehicles in the second half than the 47,077 delivered in the first six months.
With the the Model 3 now hitting the streets, Tesla plans to soon unveil an electric semi-truck. The line up will expand further with the Model Y, a smaller crossover Mr Musk has said could arrive as soon as late 2019.
He recanted a previous statement that the vehicle will be built using a new architecture, saying the company will substantially carry over underpinnings used for the Model 3.
“That will really accelerate our ability to get to Model Y to market faster,” Mr Musk said. “I’d like to thank my executive team for stopping me from being a fool. I still think we want to do the crazy thing in the future, but we will punt that until after the compact SUV.”

What is myofascial pain syndrome?
Myofascial pain syndrome refers to pain and inflammation in the body’s soft tissue. MPS is a chronic condition that affects the fascia (connective tissue that covers the muscles, which develops knots, also known as trigger points).
What are trigger points?
Trigger points are irritable knots in the soft tissue that covers muscle tissue. Through injury or overuse, muscle fibres contract as a reactive and protective measure, creating tension in the form of hard and, palpable nodules. Overuse and sustained posture are the main culprits in developing trigger points.
What is myofascial or trigger-point release?
Releasing these nodules requires a hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure to release muscular shortness and tightness. This eliminates restrictions in connective tissue in orderto restore motion and alleviate pain. Therapy balls have proven effective at causing enough commotion in the tissue, prompting the release of these hard knots.

Basquiat in Abu Dhabi
One of Basquiat’s paintings, the vibrant Cabra (1981–82), now hangs in Louvre Abu Dhabi temporarily, on loan from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
The latter museum is not open physically, but has assembled a collection and puts together a series of events called Talking Art, such as this discussion, moderated by writer Chaedria LaBouvier.
It's something of a Basquiat season in Abu Dhabi at the moment. Last week, The Radiant Child, a documentary on Basquiat was shown at Manarat Al Saadiyat, and tonight (April 18) the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is throwing the re-creation of a party tonight, of the legendary Canal Zone party thrown in 1979, which epitomised the collaborative scene of the time. It was at Canal Zone that Basquiat met prominent members of the art world and moved from unknown graffiti artist into someone in the spotlight.
“We’ve invited local resident arists, we’ll have spray cans at the ready,” says curator Maisa Al Qassemi of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
