Given the mass of discounts services now available, it's a wonder that anyone is paying the full price for anything.
More than 20 daily deals websites - including big players such as Groupon and a deluge of copycats - are operating in the UAE, offering discounts on anything from dining out to cosmetic treatments.
Despite this, one internet firm based in Dubai says it has launched a discounts service with a difference.
RoundMenu, which was launched in June by Honeybee Tech Ventures (HBT), offers discounts of up to 40 per cent on restaurant bills.
The app is available on Apple, Android and BlackBerry smartphones, and features promotions for more than 200 restaurants.
What makes RoundMenu different is that the deals are available at any time, and require no physical voucher, its developers say.
Most discounts are for restaurants in Dubai, with just a handful in Abu Dhabi. HBT says more are being added.
To take advantage of an offer, users book a table via the app, and send a SMS to a special number. Each message costs Dh5 to send - RoundMenu's main source of revenue. In return, they are sent an SMS discount voucher showing the time of their booking.
The RoundMenu app performed well in tests by The National. It quickly identifies your location and displays a map showing nearby restaurants offering discounts.
The National chose Jedoudna, a Lebanese restaurant in Dubai Media City, to test the service. The friendly waiting staff there immediately recognised the offer, and gave a 30 per cent discount on the Dh100 (US$27) bill, a Dh25 saving after the cost of the SMS.
One minor gripe with RoundMenu is that opening timings are not displayed for all outlets.
But overall, the service proved handy. Time will tell whether copycat services follow.

Types of bank fraud
1) Phishing
Fraudsters send an unsolicited email that appears to be from a financial institution or online retailer. The hoax email requests that you provide sensitive information, often by clicking on to a link leading to a fake website.
2) Smishing
The SMS equivalent of phishing. Fraudsters falsify the telephone number through “text spoofing,” so that it appears to be a genuine text from the bank.
3) Vishing
The telephone equivalent of phishing and smishing. Fraudsters may pose as bank staff, police or government officials. They may persuade the consumer to transfer money or divulge personal information.
4) SIM swap
Fraudsters duplicate the SIM of your mobile number without your knowledge or authorisation, allowing them to conduct financial transactions with your bank.
5) Identity theft
Someone illegally obtains your confidential information, through various ways, such as theft of your wallet, bank and utility bill statements, computer intrusion and social networks.
6) Prize scams
Fraudsters claiming to be authorised representatives from well-known organisations (such as Etisalat, du, Dubai Shopping Festival, Expo2020, Lulu Hypermarket etc) contact victims to tell them they have won a cash prize and request them to share confidential banking details to transfer the prize money.

The rules on fostering in the UAE
A foster couple or family must:
- be Muslim, Emirati and be residing in the UAE
- not be younger than 25 years old
- not have been convicted of offences or crimes involving moral turpitude
- be free of infectious diseases or psychological and mental disorders
- have the ability to support its members and the foster child financially
- undertake to treat and raise the child in a proper manner and take care of his or her health and well-being
- A single, divorced or widowed Muslim Emirati female, residing in the UAE may apply to foster a child if she is at least 30 years old and able to support the child financially
