Royal Dutch Shell reported a sharp rise in net profit on Thursday, ahead of analyst forecasts and supported by stronger oil prices and improved refining margins.
Net income in the quarter, based on a current cost of supplies (CCS) and excluding exceptional items rose 136 percent to US$3.86 billion, compared with a company-provided analysts’ consensus of $3.05bn.
A year ago, net income was $1.55bn.
A near 55 per cent rise in oil prices in the first quarter compared with a year earlier to around $54 a barrel was the main driver in the growth in earnings.
A billion dollars in cost savings and budget cuts made over the past three years as well as around $20bn of asset sales following the $54bn acquisition of BG Group last February also helped increase cash flow and boost profits.
Shell joined rivals in reporting better than expected results, after BP, ExxonMobil, Chevron and Total all posted analyst-beating earnings.

Libya's Gold
UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.
