Devotees of this column will remember that back in November we brought you the gold-finish water cooler retailing for US$1,769. Now we up the stakes and introduce you to Aurentum, the company that makes the $1 million shisha.
Readers who attended January's Big Boys Toys luxury-lifestyle exhibition in Dubai may already be familiar with Aurentum because that is where the company debuted its Aurum79 collection of water bottles and glasses.
The collection is limited to three one-off sets each of a different design. Made of either crystal or silver, the bottles are covered in 24-carat gold and diamonds. Coléo, another Swiss company whose work is inspired by nature, crafted the butterflies and beetles that adorn the bottles.
Each bottle and glass set comes in its own wooden box that has a 24-carat gold lock and a gold key that can be worn as a necklace. Price per bottle is $300,000. Rather philanthropically, the company will donate 10 per cent of the profit of each sale to charity.
Aurentum has again teamed up with Coléo to produce its top-end shisha."We wanted to keep up the old traditions, and complete it with modern art, in a very luxurious fashion," Aurentum says on its website.
The $1m shisha is solid gold and weighs more than 12kg. It is decorated with eight scarabaeus made of platinum, diamonds and rubies. The creature pictured is intended to be reminiscent of the Bentley symbol. These are designed by Coléo. The golden shisha is a one-off and it's still up for grabs.
For those on a "budget", silver and gold-plated shisha are available from $73,556. These also have Coléo's bejewelled creatures. They can also be customised to the buyer's wishes.
Remo Brun, a spokesman, says the company is optimistic about demand for its products in the Middle East. He added that there is a lot of interest in the Asian markets, particularly in Hong Kong. A must for any well-heeled hookah aficionado.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.
For sale
A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
- An Egyptian Mummy mask dating from 700BC-30BC, is on offer for £11,807 ($15,275) online by a seller in Mexico
- A coffin lid dating back to 664BC-332BC was offered for sale by a Colorado-based art dealer, with a starting price of $65,000
- A shabti that was on sale through a Chicago-based coin dealer, dating from 1567BC-1085BC, is up for $1,950
