Work begins on Dh1bn Deerfields project

Work has begun on Deerfields Town Square, a Dh1 billion (US$272mn) mixed-used project being developed by MBI in Abu Dhabi. Initial groundwork has started on the 220,000 square metre site, which will eventually include homes, offices, an hotel and a wide range of retail outlets, including a Carrefour supermarket. Architecture firm RMJM has been hired as the lead consultant, while the main contractor is expected to be appointed soon. Completion is expected in the second quarter of 2011.

"All the preliminary planning has been done and we are in the final stages of selecting a contractor who shares our work philosophy and vision for Deerfields," said Banu Tas, the general manager of Deerfields Town Square. Earlier this year, MBI signed an MOU with Carrefour hypermarket for a 20-year lease deal. The anchor shop of the French retail giant will span 10,000-square metre area at the project.

MBI is an investment company with interests in property and construction, infrastructure, and industrial ventures. agiuffrida@thenational.ae
