The scale of Abu Dhabi's impressive economic development has been captured in an extensive government study.
The number of buildings in the emirate has grown to 165,071, a rise of 43 per cent in the past five years, according to the study by Statistics Centre Abu Dhabi (SCAD), released today.
Across the same period, the number of employers, including public and private sector entities, has grown by nearly 80 per cent to 81,229.
In addition to shedding light on the emirate's rapid economic growth, the survey also offers an insight into the current dynamics of the property and business sectors.
More than 40,500 property units are vacant, according to the survey, with a further 10,000 buildings under construction.
A total of 76 per cent of employers within the emirate employed fewer than five staff. Only 4.2 per cent of employers hired more than 50 workers.
The survey is the first stage in an effort by the government agency to conduct a population census for the first time.
It covers Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western region.
