Investors in the region remained cautious for the second session in a row on modest volumes. The Dubai Financial Market General Index closed 0.9 per cent higher at 1,605.22. Emaar Properties and Emirates NBD, the two most heavily weighted stocks in the index, rose 1.8 per cent and 3.2 per cent to Dh3.41 and Dh2.80, respectively.
Deyaar Development and Union Properties, the other two listed developers in Dubai, rose by 2.4 per cent and 0.9 per cent to Dh0.34 and Dh0.42, respectively. The cooling company Tabreed rose 2.2 per cent to Dh0.42. It said yesterday it had not made distribution payments on its Dh1.7 billion Islamic bonds maturing next year. Payments were due on May 19. Despite the gains, volume for the exchange was under 100 million shares, well below average.
"Investors are still apprehensive. They are shocked from the losses earlier in the week," said Fadi al Said, a senior fund manager at ING Investments Management in Dubai. The Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange General Index retreated 0.2 per cent to 2,641.10 with losses in Aabar Investments and Dana Gas dragging on the index. Aabar dropped 1.6 per cent to Dh1.88 while Dana Gas declined 1.3 per cent to Dh0.75. First Gulf Bank dropped 2.1 per cent to Dh16.50.
Elsewhere in the region, the Muscat measure added the most, closing 2 per cent higher. The Kuwait benchmark closed up slightly. Bahrain and Qatar shares declined 1.3 and 0.2 per cent, respectively. The Saudi market was closed. @Email:skhan@thenational.ae

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

The struggle is on for active managers
David Einhorn closed out 2018 with his biggest annual loss ever for the 22-year-old Greenlight Capital.
The firm’s main hedge fund fell 9 per cent in December, extending this year’s decline to 34 percent, according to an investor update viewed by Bloomberg.
Greenlight posted some of the industry’s best returns in its early years, but has stumbled since losing more than 20 per cent in 2015.
Other value-investing managers have also struggled, as a decade of historically low interest rates and the rise of passive investing and quant trading pushed growth stocks past their inexpensive brethren. Three Bays Capital and SPO Partners & Co., which sought to make wagers on undervalued stocks, closed in 2018. Mr Einhorn has repeatedly expressed his frustration with the poor performance this year, while remaining steadfast in his commitment to value investing.
Greenlight, which posted gains only in May and October, underperformed both the broader market and its peers in 2018. The S&P 500 Index dropped 4.4 per cent, including dividends, while the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index, an early indicator of industry performance, fell 7 per cent through December. 28.
