Security at UAE airports is becoming increasingly automated as new border control security measures are introduced.
Emaratech, the suppliers of e-gate, which identifies travellers through fingerprint scanning at Dubai’s airports, will introduce iris-scanning smart gates in terminals one and two at Dubai International and Al Maktoum International by the end of this year.
Smart gates have already been installed in Dubai’s Terminal Three.
Smart gates will eventually replace e-gates at UAE airports.
“There is a roll-out plan and we are working closely with the Dubai Airports Authority and Department of Residency and Foreign Affairs,” said Wael Barghouti the marketing and communications manager at emaratech. “We are waiting for them to tell us when we can install because there are some expansion plans going on.”
According to Mr Barghouti, rollout plans are still in progress for deploying smart gates in many terminals and based on operational plans for airports. Currently, emaratech cannot comment on any specific timeframes in the case of the Abu Dhabi airport.
The smart gates can check three to four people in one minute without the need for passengers to stand and wait, whereas e-gates take up to 40 seconds to check in one person.
“There are many benefits of using iris on-the-move technology as there is a vast range of benefits for different industries, one of which is the quick entry and exit for a large number of passengers,” said Thani Al Zaffin, the director general of emaratech. “Technological innovation is key to meeting the rapid increase in passenger numbers across Middle East airports, ports and land borders.”
Dubai Airport received more than 60 million passengers from January to November last year, an increase of 15 per cent from the same period in 2012.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

Labour dispute
The insured employee may still file an ILOE claim even if a labour dispute is ongoing post termination, but the insurer may suspend or reject payment, until the courts resolve the dispute, especially if the reason for termination is contested. The outcome of the labour court proceedings can directly affect eligibility.
