Higher food and education costs pushed up consumer prices in the UAE last month, official data show. The consumer price index rose 0.78 per cent last month compared with April last year, the National Bureau of Statistics reported. On a monthly basis, consumer prices last month eased 0.03 per cent from March. Education costs rose by 10.46 per cent last month from the year earlier, with food and beverage costs increasing by 4.52 per cent on a yearly basis. Housing costs edged up 0.05 per cent.
Inflationary pressures elsewhere in the Gulf are forecast to slowly increase this year as economic recovery takes hold and the prices of imported food goods rise. In Bahrain, the annual inflation rate last month sped up to 2.7 per cent year-on-year from 1.8 per cent in March, on higher food prices, official data from the kingdom showed yesterday. Inflation in Bahrain has picked up after slowing to 1.1 per cent in November last year. The main contributor to the increase on a monthly basis was higher food prices, which rose 3.3 per cent from March.
Saudi Arabia reported that inflation accelerated for a fourth month in April to a 10 month high of 4.9 per cent. Inflation across the Gulf slowed last year from 2008 highs as the financial crisis lowered housing costs and food prices. @Email:tarnold@thenational.ae

What is dialysis?
Dialysis is a way of cleaning your blood when your kidneys fail and can no longer do the job.

There are two kinds of dialysis — haemodialysis and peritoneal.
In haemodialysis, blood is pumped out of your body to an artificial kidney machine that filter your blood and returns it to your body by tubes.
In peritoneal dialysis, the inside lining of your own belly acts as a natural filter. Wastes are taken out by means of a cleansing fluid which is washed in and out of your belly in cycles.

$1,000 award for 1,000 days on madrasa portal
Daily cash awards of $1,000 dollars will sweeten the Madrasa e-learning project by tempting more pupils to an education portal to deepen their understanding of math and sciences.
School children are required to watch an educational video each day and answer a question related to it. They then enter into a raffle draw for the $1,000 prize.
“We are targeting everyone who wants to learn. This will be $1,000 for 1,000 days so there will be a winner every day for 1,000 days,” said Sara Al Nuaimi, project manager of the Madrasa e-learning platform that was launched on Tuesday by the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, to reach Arab pupils from kindergarten to grade 12 with educational videos.
“The objective of the Madrasa is to become the number one reference for all Arab students in the world. The 5,000 videos we have online is just the beginning, we have big ambitions. Today in the Arab world there are 50 million students. We want to reach everyone who is willing to learn.”

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
