Etihad and Alitalia unveiled two Airbus A330-200 aircraft in Milan on Monday to showcase Expo 2015, which will be hosted by the city.
But the celebrations at Malpensa Airport contrasted sharply with a less festive mood elsewhere in Europe’s aviation sector – where a strike by Lufthansa pilots caused flight disruption throughout the continent.
“What we bring with Malpensa is global connectivity,” said James Hogan, the president and chief executive of Etihad Airways. “Alitalia is not only getting alliance, but a federation of carriers.”
The development comes months after Etihad agreed to buy a 49 per cent stake in the loss-making Italian airline. Regulatory approval is hoped to be secured by the end of the year.
“When we started many years ago, it was difficult to think that Alitalia would celebrate the expo as we are today,” said Giuseppe Sala, the chief executive of the Expo 2015 company.
Milan, the commercial capital of Italy, is expected to attract about 20 million visitors to the Expo next year.
Alitalia and Etihad have committed to buy 300,000 tickets for the Expo, and to sell them to their customers.
Etihad’s planned acquisition of Alitalia is the latest in a slew of minority stake purchases in recent years, including Germany’s Air Berlin, Virgin Australia, and India’s Jet Airways. Mr Hogan hopes to secure approval from regulators by the end of the year for the Alitalia deal.
“The team has been very proactive in working with the EU and their requirements, we’re hoping to secure approval by the end of the year,” said Mr Hogan.
Shareholders have pressed Alitalia, which has been a loss-making airline for more than a decade, to shed jobs amid a restructuring plan intended to make Alitalia break even by 2017.
Etihad’s investment in Alitalia is part of a wider investment drive in the country. Mubadala, for example, has extensive investments in Italy, including equity stakes in Ferrari and Piaggio.
There are also 300 Italian companies operating in the UAE, which is also home to 10,000 citizens of Italy.
The expansion of Arabian Gulf carriers in Europe is stoking tension with European competitors as the industry faces increased competitive pressures.
Lufthansa said on Monday that the longest strike campaign in its history would ground about 1,500 flights over two days.
The strike comes days after the German airline said it would drop flights to Abu Dhabi by next year because the route was unprofitable and in protest of what the German carrier regarded as intense competition from rivals supported by Gulf carriers.
Air Berlin, in which Etihad has a minority stake, said German regulators refused to grant approval for 34 codeshare flights with Etihad. Air Berlin, in coordination with a team from Etihad, are pursuing talks this week to resolve the “misunderstanding on the interpretation of the codeshare provisions”.
“The Etihad model is a different model to our competitors,” said Mr Hogan. “Their action is to protect their market position. I would argue that we give great connectivity to Germany.
“We are invested in Germany. We would obviously like to see Air Berlin be rebuilt and to open up inbound and outbound traffic, and it’s an important relationship between the UAE and Germany so let’s see how the talks go.”

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021
Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.
The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.
These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.
“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.
“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.
“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.
“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”
Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.
There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.
“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.
“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.
“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”

Basquiat in Abu Dhabi
One of Basquiat’s paintings, the vibrant Cabra (1981–82), now hangs in Louvre Abu Dhabi temporarily, on loan from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
The latter museum is not open physically, but has assembled a collection and puts together a series of events called Talking Art, such as this discussion, moderated by writer Chaedria LaBouvier.
It's something of a Basquiat season in Abu Dhabi at the moment. Last week, The Radiant Child, a documentary on Basquiat was shown at Manarat Al Saadiyat, and tonight (April 18) the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is throwing the re-creation of a party tonight, of the legendary Canal Zone party thrown in 1979, which epitomised the collaborative scene of the time. It was at Canal Zone that Basquiat met prominent members of the art world and moved from unknown graffiti artist into someone in the spotlight.
“We’ve invited local resident arists, we’ll have spray cans at the ready,” says curator Maisa Al Qassemi of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

Khalfan Mubarak
The Al Jazira playmaker has for some time been tipped for stardom within UAE football, with Quique Sanchez Flores, his former manager at Al Ahli, once labelling him a “genius”. He was only 17. Now 23, Mubarak has developed into a crafty supplier of chances, evidenced by his seven assists in six league matches this season. Still to display his class at international level, though.
Rayan Yaslam
The Al Ain attacking midfielder has become a regular starter for his club in the past 15 months. Yaslam, 23, is a tidy and intelligent player, technically proficient with an eye for opening up defences. Developed while alongside Abdulrahman in the Al Ain first-team and has progressed well since manager Zoran Mamic’s arrival. However, made his UAE debut only last December.
Ismail Matar
The Al Wahda forward is revered by teammates and a key contributor to the squad. At 35, his best days are behind him, but Matar is incredibly experienced and an example to his colleagues. His ability to cope with tournament football is a concern, though, despite Matar beginning the season well. Not a like-for-like replacement, although the system could be adjusted to suit.
