A consortium led by Italian engineering firm Saipem has been awarded a contract to carry out maintenance services on infrastructure associated with Egypt's massive Zohr offshore gas field by local developer Petrobel.
The contract referred to as "life of field" will see Saipem and its partner Petroleum Marine Services carry out maintenance services for the entirety of the field's development.
Saipem's Sonsub business line, which specialises in the management and maintenance of subsea assets through the deployment of underwater technology and robotics will oversee execution of the contract.
In July 2017, Saipem won a $900m contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of Petrobel's activities on the Zohr field in the Mediterranean.
The discovery of Zohr, which is estimated to hold 850 billion cubic feet of gas in August 2015 by Italian energy firm Eni has proven a game-changer for Egypt, which saw frequent power cuts and protests due to the shortage of gas in the country. The development of the resource is set to transform Egypt into a net gas exporter. The North African state is looking to export gas from the Zohr field by early 2019 and will look to end imports of liquefied natural gas by end of the year.
