The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) announced the completion of nearly a third of a Dh260 million water infrastructure expansion project underway in various locations in the emirate. It is one of a series of projects the utility is undertaking to improve water supply to Dubai's growing population.
Dewa said on Sunday it had completed 13 kilometre of the 46km-project, which is expected to be finished by May next year.
Saeed Al , the manTayeraging director and chief executive of Dewa, said that the project would “increase water flow between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road along Hessa street and Al Qudra road, and along Jebel Ali to Al Hebab road towards Emirates Road in the areas between Dubai to Al Ain road and Al Qudra.”

He added that the project would extend the main water pipeline from Dewa’s Al Lusaily up to the junction between Al Ain road at Jebel Ali and the Al Hebab road, and several other pipelines from Mushrif station (headed towards Al Warqa) and Al Khaleej road.
Dewa has seen a 25 per cent jump in customers over the past five years to about 670,000. The utility is planning to increase its water capacity by 60 per cent by 2030.
The utility last month signed a deal with its Abu Dhabi counterpart, the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, to extend water interconnectivity between the emirates.
The two utilities are currently in discussions to tender the project for a consultancy, which will carry out the feasibility studies required to start construction.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Retail gloom
Online grocer Ocado revealed retail sales fell 5.7 per cen in its first quarter as customers switched back to pre-pandemic shopping patterns.
It was a tough comparison from a year earlier, when the UK was in lockdown, but on a two-year basis its retail division, a joint venture with Marks&Spencer, rose 31.7 per cent over the quarter.
The group added that a 15 per cent drop in customer basket size offset an 11.6. per cent rise in the number of customer transactions.

The currency conundrum
Russ Mould, investment director at online trading platform AJ Bell, says almost every major currency has challenges right now. “The US has a huge budget deficit, the euro faces political friction and poor growth, sterling is bogged down by Brexit, China’s renminbi is hit by debt fears while slowing Chinese growth is hurting commodity exporters like Australia and Canada.”
Most countries now actively want a weak currency to make their exports more competitive. “China seems happy to let the renminbi drift lower, the Swiss are still running quantitative easing at full tilt and central bankers everywhere are actively talking down their currencies or offering only limited support," says Mr Mould.
This is a race to the bottom, and everybody wants to be a winner.
