Mubadala Investment Company, Abu Dhabi’s strategic investment vehicle, said it will bring six of its fully-owned UAE-based medical assets into an integrated network for specialised care.
Mubadala Health, the integrated healthcare network, will encompass Abu Dhabi Telemedicine Centre (ADTC), Amana Healthcare, Capital Health Screening Centre (CHSC), Healthpoint, Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) and the National Reference Laboratory (NRL), Mubadala said in a statement on Wednesday.
Hasan Jasem Al Nowais is appointed chief executive of Mubadala Health and will oversee a team of clinical and non-clinical staff across the network.
"The network’s leadership team brings an entrepreneurial energy and focus to the healthcare sector," Mr Al Nowais said. "We will optimise our resources and increase efficiencies with our partners to deliver value-based healthcare.”
Mubadala Health’s launch comes amid the Covid-19 pandemic and during one of the most challenging years for regional and global healthcare.
The health crisis has led to the rapid acceleration of solutions in the areas of telemedicine, health screening and lab testing.
Abu Dhabi has drawn on its local manufacturing capabilities during the pandemic to meet higher demand for medical equipment. Strata, the composite plane parts maker in Al Ain, began making N95 masks last year in partnership with Honeywell.
Mubadala Health's six assets include diagnostic and treatment areas that "address the most pressing clinical needs both, locally and regionally, reducing the need for travel abroad for complex medical care", according to the statement.
In addition, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi will remain an integral part of the network. Together the assets will address health and diagnostic areas including long-term care and rehabilitation, telemedicine and corporate medical screening, treatment of chronic diseases, comprehensive lab and testing services, and specialties such as endocrinology, orthopedics, cardiology, neurology, dentistry and digestive diseases.
Mubadala Health also said it is developing a number of training and education programmes for Emirati caregivers to contribute to the sustainability of the country’s healthcare sector.
"Collaboration with industry partners and leading educational institutions will also enable Mubadala Health to deliver new treatments and regional ‘firsts’ in patient care," it said.
Mubadala Health is comprised of 13 centres of expertise, with more to launch in 2021.
More than 3,800 staff, including UAE nationals, will be employed across the six assets. It will have more than 25 regional and international accreditations across the network, including Joint Commission International (JCI), College of American Pathologists, and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
Mubadala Health’s partners include Imperial College London, Medgate, and Wooridul Spine Centre, alongside Cleveland Clinic Foundation in relation to Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.
What drives subscription retailing?
Once the domain of newspaper home deliveries, subscription model retailing has combined with e-commerce to permeate myriad products and services.
The concept has grown tremendously around the world and is forecast to thrive further, according to UnivDatos Market Insights’ report on recent and predicted trends in the sector.
The global subscription e-commerce market was valued at $13.2 billion (Dh48.5bn) in 2018. It is forecast to touch $478.2bn in 2025, and include the entertainment, fitness, food, cosmetics, baby care and fashion sectors.
The report says subscription-based services currently constitute “a small trend within e-commerce”. The US hosts almost 70 per cent of recurring plan firms, including leaders Dollar Shave Club, Hello Fresh and Netflix. Walmart and Sephora are among longer established retailers entering the space.
UnivDatos cites younger and affluent urbanites as prime subscription targets, with women currently the largest share of end-users.
That’s expected to remain unchanged until 2025, when women will represent a $246.6bn market share, owing to increasing numbers of start-ups targeting women.
Personal care and beauty occupy the largest chunk of the worldwide subscription e-commerce market, with changing lifestyles, work schedules, customisation and convenience among the chief future drivers.
