The UAE and Malaysia have signed an initial agreement to support joint investment in artificial intelligence, that aims to use AI and advanced data analytics to improve community safety, enhance national security, and increase operational efficiencies.
According to the agreement, both countries will collaborate in promoting technical co-operation in various key areas, the Abu Dhabi Media Office announced on Monday.
This includes the development of AI-driven national security systems, the establishment of high-performance computing data centres and national security operations centres, the improvement of customs tax collection and the improvement of operational efficiencies.
The initial agreement was officially signed by Mohamed Alsuwaidi, the UAE’s Minister of Investment, and Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Malaysia’s Minister of Home Affairs, in the presence of Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi; Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia and Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi and National Security Adviser.
“This memorandum of understanding represents a significant step towards enhancing co-operation in artificial intelligence and operational efficiency, contributing to the well-being of our societies and improving quality of life for our communities,” said Mr Alsuwaidi.
The UAE and Malaysia also discussed the latest advancements in utilising advanced technology and artificial intelligence in various sectors. The focus was on areas that have a positive impact on living standards and quality of life.
The agreement marks a “significant step forward following confirmation of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (Cepa) in October 2024”, the Abu Dhabi Media Office said.
This significant achievement further strengthens the robust economic ties between the UAE and Malaysia. In the first half of 2024, non-oil trade between the two countries reached $2.5 billion, marking a 7 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Malaysia stands as the UAE's 12th largest trading partner in Asia and ranks fifth among Asean nations. The UAE holds the position of Malaysia's second-largest trade partner in the Arab world, representing 32 per cent of Malaysia's trade within the region.
Malaysia will start negotiations for a free-trade agreement with the Gulf countries in May as the South-East Asian nation aims to further strengthen trade and economic ties with the six-member bloc.
The Gulf level talks will follow the signing of the Cepa between Malaysia and the UAE on Tuesday, coinciding with the visit of Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to the Emirates, Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Zafrul Aziz told The National on Monday.

What is graphene?
Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged like honeycomb.
It was discovered in 2004, when Russian-born Manchester scientists Andrei Geim and Kostya Novoselov were "playing about" with sticky tape and graphite - the material used as "lead" in pencils.
Placing the tape on the graphite and peeling it, they managed to rip off thin flakes of carbon. In the beginning they got flakes consisting of many layers of graphene. But as they repeated the process many times, the flakes got thinner.
By separating the graphite fragments repeatedly, they managed to create flakes that were just one atom thick. Their experiment had led to graphene being isolated for the very first time.
At the time, many believed it was impossible for such thin crystalline materials to be stable. But examined under a microscope, the material remained stable, and when tested was found to have incredible properties.
It is many times times stronger than steel, yet incredibly lightweight and flexible. It is electrically and thermally conductive but also transparent. The world's first 2D material, it is one million times thinner than the diameter of a single human hair.
But the 'sticky tape' method would not work on an industrial scale. Since then, scientists have been working on manufacturing graphene, to make use of its incredible properties.
In 2010, Geim and Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. Their discovery meant physicists could study a new class of two-dimensional materials with unique properties.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.
