UAE defence conglomerate Edge signed an agreement with state-owned Ukrainian military companies Ukroboronprom and Ukrspecexport to exchange and develop advanced technology.
The agreement will result in investments worth more than $1 billion.
The signing took place at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi during the official visit of the Ukrainian president.
“Signing this tri-party agreement demonstrates our intent to co-operate with leading international companies within the defence industry,” chief executive and managing director of Edge Faisal Al Bannai said yesterday.
Ukroboronprom, established in 2010, is a Ukrainian state-owned defence conglomerate comprised of more than 100 companies involved in scientific research and the development and manufacture of arms and military equipment.
Ukrspecexport is also state-owned and makes arms and ammunition, military and manufacturing equipment, spare parts and explosives. It also services and repairs weapons and military equipment for foreign buyers.
"We are offering the best technologies available in Ukraine as well as ambitious joint development programmes," said Vadym Nozdria, director general of Ukrspecexport.
Abu Dhabi-based Edge, set up in 2019, is an advanced technology group that ranks among the top 25 military suppliers in the world, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
Gulf countries are increasingly producing and procuring military equipment locally, signalling a shift in the way they do business with international defence companies.
Technology transfers and commitments to produce and buy equipment locally have become key factors in determining which companies secure major arms sales orders in the region.

• Founded in 2014, Telr is a payment aggregator and gateway with an office in Silicon Oasis. It’s e-commerce entry plan costs Dh349 monthly (plus VAT). QR codes direct customers to an online payment page and merchants can generate payments through messaging apps.
• Business Bay’s Pallapay claims 40,000-plus active merchants who can invoice customers and receive payment by card. Fees range from 1.99 per cent plus Dh1 per transaction depending on payment method and location, such as online or via UAE mobile.
• Tap started in May 2013 in Kuwait, allowing Middle East businesses to bill, accept, receive and make payments online “easier, faster and smoother” via goSell and goCollect. It supports more than 10,000 merchants. Monthly fees range from US$65-100, plus card charges of 2.75-3.75 per cent and Dh1.2 per sale.
• 2checkout’s “all-in-one payment gateway and merchant account” accepts payments in 200-plus markets for 2.4-3.9 per cent, plus a Dh1.2-Dh1.8 currency conversion charge. The US provider processes online shop and mobile transactions and has 17,000-plus active digital commerce users.
• PayPal is probably the best-known online goods payment method - usually used for eBay purchases - but can be used to receive funds, providing everyone’s signed up. Costs from 2.9 per cent plus Dh1.2 per transaction.

What is blockchain?
Blockchain is a form of distributed ledger technology, a digital system in which data is recorded across multiple places at the same time. Unlike traditional databases, DLTs have no central administrator or centralised data storage. They are transparent because the data is visible and, because they are automatically replicated and impossible to be tampered with, they are secure.
The main difference between blockchain and other forms of DLT is the way data is stored as ‘blocks’ – new transactions are added to the existing ‘chain’ of past transactions, hence the name ‘blockchain’. It is impossible to delete or modify information on the chain due to the replication of blocks across various locations.
Blockchain is mostly associated with cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Due to the inability to tamper with transactions, advocates say this makes the currency more secure and safer than traditional systems. It is maintained by a network of people referred to as ‘miners’, who receive rewards for solving complex mathematical equations that enable transactions to go through.
However, one of the major problems that has come to light has been the presence of illicit material buried in the Bitcoin blockchain, linking it to the dark web.
Other blockchain platforms can offer things like smart contracts, which are automatically implemented when specific conditions from all interested parties are reached, cutting the time involved and the risk of mistakes. Another use could be storing medical records, as patients can be confident their information cannot be changed. The technology can also be used in supply chains, voting and has the potential to used for storing property records.
