India's IndiGo makes history with record order for 500 Airbus narrow-body jets

India's discount airline IndiGo made history by placing the biggest single purchase agreement in the history of commercial aviation with a record order for 500 Airbus A320 family aircraft on Monday, handing the European plane maker a colossal win on the first day of the Paris Air Show over US rival Boeing.

The firm order surpasses Air India's provisional order in February for 470 jets from Airbus and Boeing, Airbus said in a statement.

The deal takes the Indian airline's order backlog to nearly 1,000 planes as it seeks to expand to meet a sharp surge in travel demand in the world's fastest-growing aviation market, IndiGo said in a statement on Monday.

The airline, which currently operates a fleet of more than 300 aircraft, has previous orders totalling 480 planes that have yet to be delivered through to the end of this decade.

“It is difficult to overstate the significance of IndiGo’s new historic order,” Pieter Elbers, the airline's chief executive, said.

The nearly 1,000-strong order “enables IndiGo to fulfil its mission to continue to boost economic growth, social cohesion and mobility in India”.

The aircraft deliveries will start in 2030 through to 2035, IndiGo said.

The engine selection for the order will be made “in due course”, as will the exact mix of A320 and A321 aircraft, the airline said.

“This landmark order marks a new chapter in Airbus and IndiGo’s relationship that is democratising affordable air travel for millions of people in the world’s fastest growing aviation market,” said Christian Scherer, chief commercial officer and head of international at Airbus.

The deal solidifies Airbus's dominance over the single-aisle jet segment, which is the most widely flown aircraft type.

For IndiGo, the order allows the airline to capitalise on a travel boom in the world’s most populated country and drive its ambitions for international expansion.

Earlier this month, Airbus said that Asia and the Middle East, led by China and India, would power air traffic growth, further shifting aviation industry's “centre of gravity” eastward.

Earlier on Monday, Airbus scored another win in the major aviation market of Saudi Arabia.

Discount airline Flynas firmed up an order for 30 more Airbus A320neo family aircraft worth 14 billion Saudi riyals ($3.73 billion) at list prices, expanding operations in line with the country's ambitions to grow its aviation sector.

What the law says

Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.

“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.

“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”

If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

How to improve Arabic reading in early years

One 45-minute class per week in Standard Arabic is not sufficient

The goal should be for grade 1 and 2 students to become fluent readers

Subjects like technology, social studies, science can be taught in later grades

Grade 1 curricula should include oral instruction in Standard Arabic

First graders must regularly practice individual letters and combinations

Time should be slotted in class to read longer passages in early grades

Improve the appearance of textbooks

Revision of curriculum should be undertaken as per research findings

Conjugations of most common verb forms should be taught

Systematic learning of Standard Arabic grammar

WHAT FANS WILL LOVE ABOUT RUSSIA

FANS WILL LOVE
Uber is ridiculously cheap and, as Diego Saez discovered, mush safer. A 45-minute taxi from Pulova airport to Saint Petersburg’s Nevsky Prospect can cost as little as 500 roubles (Dh30).

FANS WILL LOATHE
Uber policy in Russia is that they can start the fare as soon as they arrive at the pick-up point — and oftentimes they start it even before arriving, or worse never arrive yet charge you anyway.

FANS WILL LOVE
It’s amazing how active Russians are on social media and your accounts will surge should you post while in the country. Throw in a few Cyrillic hashtags and watch your account numbers rocket.

FANS WILL LOATHE
With cold soups, bland dumplings and dried fish, Russian cuisine is not to everybody’s tastebuds.  Fortunately, there are plenty Georgian restaurants to choose from, which are both excellent and economical.

FANS WILL LOVE
The World Cup will take place during St Petersburg's White Nights Festival, which means perpetual daylight in a city that genuinely never sleeps. (Think toddlers walking the streets with their grandmothers at 4am.)

FANS WILL LOATHE
The walk from Krestovsky Ostrov metro station to Saint Petersburg Arena on a rainy day makes you wonder why some of the $1.7 billion was not spent on a weather-protected walkway.
