When it comes to naming the great cricketing nations, the UAE wouldn’t be high on too many pundits’ lists. But it looks like that is starting to change. With yesterday’s remarkable victory against Kenya in the Super Sixes in New Zealand, the UAE have secured at least a top-four place in the competition, which ensures them full One Day International status for four years. And if they beat Namibia today, they will earn a place in next year’s Cricket World Cup.
That’s quite some achievement for such a small nation – and it’s even more laudable when you consider that the team comprises amateurs who have to take time off from their jobs to represent the UAE. For example, skipper Khurram Khan, whose knock of 85 helped secure the 13-run victory and is the competition’s leading run-scorer, is a purser with Emirates Airline.
Of course, the sport is well established in the UAE, because many in the large expatriate community originate from cricket-playing nations, and Pakistan often plays its internationals here. Hopefully, victories such as this will inspire more youngsters from all backgrounds to play the game, leading one day to the establishment of a fully professional team.

- Dubai’s savings retirement scheme for foreign employees working in the emirate’s government and public sector came into effect in 2022.
- National Bonds unveiled a Golden Pension Scheme in 2022 to help private-sector foreign employees with their financial planning.
- In April 2021, Hayah Insurance unveiled a workplace savings plan to help UAE employees save for their retirement.
- Lunate, an Abu Dhabi-based investment manager, has launched a fund that will allow UAE private companies to offer employees investment returns on end-of-service benefits.

The rules on fostering in the UAE
A foster couple or family must:
- be Muslim, Emirati and be residing in the UAE
- not be younger than 25 years old
- not have been convicted of offences or crimes involving moral turpitude
- be free of infectious diseases or psychological and mental disorders
- have the ability to support its members and the foster child financially
- undertake to treat and raise the child in a proper manner and take care of his or her health and well-being
- A single, divorced or widowed Muslim Emirati female, residing in the UAE may apply to foster a child if she is at least 30 years old and able to support the child financially

Baked goods - Most cakes, cookies, pie crusts and crackers contain shortening, which is usually made from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Ready-made frosting is another source of trans fat.
Snacks - Potato, corn and tortilla chips often contain trans fat. And while popcorn can be a healthy snack, many types of packaged or microwave popcorn use trans fat to help cook or flavour the popcorn.
Fried food - Foods that require deep frying — french fries, doughnuts and fried chicken — can contain trans fat from the oil used in the cooking process.
