Zaha Hadid Architects has revealed the design for a new skyscraper in Hong Kong.
Set in the heart of the central business district, the 36-storey Murray Road project plans to bring a green oasis to the centre of one of the world’s busiest cities.
Nature is the theme for 2 Murray Road, which has been designed to echo the organic forms of the natural world, with tranquil gardens and open spaces flowing throughout. In keeping with Zaha Hadid’s famous love of curves, the buildings rounded facade has been designed to blend seamlessly with nature as well as the city around it.
The building’s base will be elevated above the ground, acting as a shelter to a courtyard and gardens below. The design is inspired by the structural forms of a Bauhinia bud about to blossom. The Bauhinia is synonymous with the city, and is known as the Hong Kong orchid tree. It first propagated in the city’s botanic gardens close to the Murray Road site, and its flowering bud features on Hong Kong’s flag.
The project is situated at the east-west / north-south junction of Hong Kong’s network of elevated pedestrian walkways, and will offer easy access to surrounding shops, restaurants and gardens.
The skyscraper will replace a multi-storey car park and will be used largely as office space. Construction work on the project has already started, however, a completion date is yet to be confirmed.

What is a robo-adviser?
Robo-advisers use an online sign-up process to gauge an investor’s risk tolerance by feeding information such as their age, income, saving goals and investment history into an algorithm, which then assigns them an investment portfolio, ranging from more conservative to higher risk ones.
These portfolios are made up of exchange traded funds (ETFs) with exposure to indices such as US and global equities, fixed-income products like bonds, though exposure to real estate, commodity ETFs or gold is also possible.
Investing in ETFs allows robo-advisers to offer fees far lower than traditional investments, such as actively managed mutual funds bought through a bank or broker. Investors can buy ETFs directly via a brokerage, but with robo-advisers they benefit from investment portfolios matched to their risk tolerance as well as being user friendly.
Many robo-advisers charge what are called wrap fees, meaning there are no additional fees such as subscription or withdrawal fees, success fees or fees for rebalancing.
