DIFF announces World Cinema programme
Dubai International Film Festival's Cinema of the World line-up features 10 of the best films of the year. At the top of the list is St Vincent by Theodore Melfi, a comedy starring Bill Murray as Vincent, a grump who is suddenly plagued by the presence of his young neighbour Oliver. Danis Tanovic brings his film Tigers, about a man (Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi) who sells substandard infant formula milk to Pakistani children. Jaswinder Singh to sing in Dubai on November 14
Contemporary Indian ghazal singer Jaswinder Singh will perform the works of noted Urdu poets and Sufi melodies in a concert titled Parvaaz at Ductac this weekend. Singh will also sing selected Punjabi tracks from his solo albums. Bollywood actor and TV-show host Annu Kapoor is part of the troupe. Big Bang Theory actress Carol Ann Susi dies
The actress best known for voicing the unseen Mrs Wolowitz on the TV comedy Big Bang Theory has died. Carol Ann Susi's agent, Pam Ellis-Evenas, said the actress died in Los Angeles on Tuesday after a brief battle with cancer. She was 62. The veteran character actress has made numerous guest appearances on TV shows since the 1970s. On the Big Bang Theory, she wasn't seen on camera as the mother of Simon Helberg's character, Howard, but her character's loud voice with a Brooklyn accent was instantly recognisable. The executive producers of the CBS sitcom say Susi was a beloved member of the Big Bang Theory family, and they praised her "immense talent and comedic timing". Susi is survived by her brother, Michael Susi, and his wife, Connie. – AP
Randy Jackson exiting American Idol after 13 years
Fox and the producers of American Idol say Randy Jackson is leaving the show after 13 seasons. In a statement on Tuesday, the network and producers said Jackson was a key part of the singing contest and would be welcomed back as a visitor. Phone and email requests to his publicist seeking comment were not im mediately returned. Jackson, Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul made up Idol’s original judging panel. Jackson served as a judge for 12 seasons, with “dawn” becoming his trademark word while assessing contestants. Jackson moved to the role of mentor this year. Director changes plot for Malaysian plane movie
A filmmaker who sparked anger earlier this year with plans for a love triangle-themed movie about the Malaysia Airlines plane disappearance says he's changing the plot to a thriller so he won't offend the families of the missing. Director Rupesh Paul unveiled a teaser trailer for The Vanishing Act at the Cannes Film Festival this year, based on the March disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines jet with 239 people on board; the plane, which was on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, has yet to be found. The trailer included an image of a gun and two crew members kissing as a third looks on in anger. Paul now says he is shooting a new trailer and the movie will be a psychological thriller. "We respect the sentiments of all those who experienced loss due to the tragedy, and the intention was never to benefit out of it," the Indian director said. "I am a filmmaker, and I would like to loosely base the film on one of the most baffling mysteries which has remained unanswered." Filming starts in January. Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell has announced her engagement to a Formula One team boss. Basquiat in Abu Dhabi
One of Basquiat’s paintings, the vibrant Cabra (1981–82), now hangs in Louvre Abu Dhabi temporarily, on loan from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
The latter museum is not open physically, but has assembled a collection and puts together a series of events called Talking Art, such as this discussion, moderated by writer Chaedria LaBouvier.
It's something of a Basquiat season in Abu Dhabi at the moment. Last week, The Radiant Child, a documentary on Basquiat was shown at Manarat Al Saadiyat, and tonight (April 18) the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is throwing the re-creation of a party tonight, of the legendary Canal Zone party thrown in 1979, which epitomised the collaborative scene of the time. It was at Canal Zone that Basquiat met prominent members of the art world and moved from unknown graffiti artist into someone in the spotlight.
“We’ve invited local resident arists, we’ll have spray cans at the ready,” says curator Maisa Al Qassemi of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021
Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.
The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.
These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.
“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.
“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.
“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.
“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”
Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.
There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.
“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.
“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.
“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”
Yemen's Bahais and the charges they often face
The Baha'i faith was made known in Yemen in the 19th century, first introduced by an Iranian man named Ali Muhammad Al Shirazi, considered the Herald of the Baha'i faith in 1844.
The Baha'i faith has had a growing number of followers in recent years despite persecution in Yemen and Iran.
Today, some 2,000 Baha'is reside in Yemen, according to Insaf.
"The 24 defendants represented by the House of Justice, which has intelligence outfits from the uS and the UK working to carry out an espionage scheme in Yemen under the guise of religion.. aimed to impant and found the Bahai sect on Yemeni soil by bringing foreign Bahais from abroad and homing them in Yemen," the charge sheet said.
Baha'Ullah, the founder of the Bahai faith, was exiled by the Ottoman Empire in 1868 from Iran to what is now Israel. Now, the Bahai faith's highest governing body, known as the Universal House of Justice, is based in the Israeli city of Haifa, which the Bahais turn towards during prayer.
The Houthis cite this as collective "evidence" of Bahai "links" to Israel - which the Houthis consider their enemy.
Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
