ABC’s Scandal reduced to 18 episodes this season

ABC says it will air four fewer episodes of Scandal than planned this season. The television network didn't say why it will broadcast 18 instead of 22 episodes. But the decision follows word that the Scandal star Kerry Washington and her new husband, the American-football player Nnamdi Asomugha, are expecting a baby. The shortened schedule will wrap production early for its pregnant star. After next Thursday's episode is broadcast, Scandal will take a break and return in late February with the final episodes of season three. The drama series set in Washington, DC, is a ratings hit for ABC and earned an Emmy nomination for its lead actress. – AP

Kareena Kapoor features in the second episode of the newly launched seventh season of the talk show Koffee with Karan alongside her cousin Ranbir Kapoor. In a preview clip, Ranbir accuses her of not being friendly "with any colleagues". "She hates all of them," he adds. Kareena agrees, saying, "A. I am not here to make friends and B. French director Édouard Molinaro dies

The French film director Édouard Molinaro, who directed the classic comedy La Cage aux Folles, has died in Paris. He was 85. A spokesman said Molinaro had succumbed to lung failure on Saturday while in hospital. The French President François Hollande hailed Molinaro as "a great, endearing and original filmmaker" who "possessed the talent for attracting a wide audience to quality films". Molinaro's greatest box office hit was a 1978 screen adaptation of the high-farce La Cage aux Folles, about a gay couple's attempt to pass as straight. The film was remade in 1996 into the popular and Oscar-nominated Hollywood movie The Birdcage starring Robin Williams, Nathan Lane and Gene Hackman. Born in Bordeaux in 1928, Molinaro became well known for the precision of his work and for his modesty. At the start of his career, he was bracketed in the "New Wave" of French filmmaking of the 1950s before veering towards vaudeville and comedies and casting the likes of Louis de Funès and Lino Ventura. – AFP

Real estate tokenisation project

Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.

The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.

Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

What the law says

Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.

“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.

“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”

If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
