Best Use of Animated Cows: The Wanted 18. Films about the first Palestinian intifada can be fun – that’s perhaps the best lesson to be learnt from first-time director Amer Shomali’s insightful documentary about events that took place during the late 1980s in his hometown, Beit Sahour. In a bid to control milk production the town bought its own cows – 18 to be precise – only to have them outlawed by the occupiers as a “threat to security”. Huge chunks of the film are told from the cows’ perspective – hilariously, and impartially – with each animal boasting his animated personality and perspective. Also of note: in his role as a vigilante citizen who steals from the rich to feed poor kids, his transport of choice is a bicycle, with which he is able to evade the police and fight dozens of baddies – all without taking his hands off the handlebars. Devil has thus gone down in history as the lamest superhero Bollywood has ever produced, after Krrish (Hrithik Roshan) in the three-movie franchise of that name, and the utterly laughable G.One (Shah Rukh Khan) in the sci-fi drama Ra.One. One whose star in 50 seconds manages to encapsulate the hero’s journey better than most feature films? There was so, so, so much to love about this scene, which had all the twists and turns of a thriller: the squiggle of olive oil on the flat grill (prompting traditionalists to wonder, “no butter”?), the open-face method and the multiple layers of cheese, so, so, so much cheese. A brief respite, close-ups of Favreau’s tattooed fingers and a tender lift of the spatula to check on the bread’s progress before, wait – out of nowhere – he is buttering it! He’s buttering on top of the oil? And ­double-grilling? Oh no, the viewer wonders, not even aware they are edge-of-their-seating a sandwich: the thing is going to fall apart! The crunch as Favreau cuts this gorgeous thing in half seems at once a miracle of sound and an utter relief. The sandwich is finished – and it is very, very good. iStockphoto.com

An entire year of films comes down to this: the Academy Awards on Sunday night in Los Angeles, when the most coveted gongs in the industry are handed out to some of the world’s most beautiful people. Yet there are so many other outstanding cinematic moments – whether silly, unintentionally hilarious or just striking in their simplicity – that don’t qualify, so we’ve made an annual event out of commemorating them. Here are Arts&Life’s third annual Alternative Academy Awards – also affectionately known as The Other Oscars.

Milestones on the road to union

1970

October 26: Bahrain withdraws from a proposal to create a federation of nine with the seven Trucial States and Qatar. 

December: Ahmed Al Suwaidi visits New York to discuss potential UN membership.

1971

March 1:  Alex Douglas Hume, Conservative foreign secretary confirms that Britain will leave the Gulf and “strongly supports” the creation of a Union of Arab Emirates.

July 12: Historic meeting at which Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid make a binding agreement to create what will become the UAE.

July 18: It is announced that the UAE will be formed from six emirates, with a proposed constitution signed. RAK is not yet part of the agreement.

August 6:  The fifth anniversary of Sheikh Zayed becoming Ruler of Abu Dhabi, with official celebrations deferred until later in the year.

August 15: Bahrain becomes independent.

September 3: Qatar becomes independent.

November 23-25: Meeting with Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid and senior British officials to fix December 2 as date of creation of the UAE.

November 29:  At 5.30pm Iranian forces seize the Greater and Lesser Tunbs by force.

November 30: Despite  a power sharing agreement, Tehran takes full control of Abu Musa. 

November 31: UK officials visit all six participating Emirates to formally end the Trucial States treaties

December 2: 11am, Dubai. New Supreme Council formally elects Sheikh Zayed as President. Treaty of Friendship signed with the UK. 11.30am. Flag raising ceremony at Union House and Al Manhal Palace in Abu Dhabi witnessed by Sheikh Khalifa, then Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

December 6: Arab League formally admits the UAE. The first British Ambassador presents his credentials to Sheikh Zayed.

December 9: UAE joins the United Nations.
