The hot list: Fit to display

Create a space that’s unashamedly extravagant, with bright pops of colour, art deco-inspire elements and a healthy dose of whimsy.

1 Fine form

Harvey Nichols is hosting a month-long exhibition of pieces by Kim Xu, who is widely regarded as one of China's most exciting up-and-coming artists. Xu is best known for fusing art and fashion, and for creating pieces that are centred on the female form — an ethos that is particularly prevalent in his latest collection, A Woman is a Piece of Art. A Woman is the Whole World. The showcase will also feature an exclusive piece of art dedicated to the region, commissioned by Harvey Nichols and entitled City of Blinding Lights.

2 Lap of luxury

This here is the very definition of a statement chair. We love the combination of an eye-popping shade of pink, a scalloped shape and a sumptuous fabric. If you’re looking for a seat that’s decadent but fun, this is it.

3 Boot cut

The newly opened Cities store in Dubai’s The Galleria Mall is fast becoming our favourite source for out-of-the-ordinary design. This is the brand’s second location — the first was in Riyadh in 2006 — and it is a veritable treasure trove of unusual pieces. We’ve got our eye on this high-heel boot vase by the Italian ceramics specialist Rometti, which was created in collaboration with the well-known lingerie designer Chantal Thomas.

4 Swept away

A recent rummage through the extensive collection of carpets in the Fatema Bint Mohammed Bin Zayed Initiative (FBMI) showroom on Jumeirah Beach Road produced plenty of exciting finds. The supplier of handmade carpets and rugs is committed to sustainable development and the empowerment of women in Afghanistan. Wool is bought locally to support farmers on the ground, only natural vegetable dyes are used in the spinning process, and carpets are designed by local university students. FBMI engages local women in the production process, offering much-needed employment and alleviation from economic hardship, as well as health-care and educational opportunities. There are a range of carpets available, in both contemporary and classic styles.

5 Shine through

There’s a raw, jewel-like beauty to the Marcelle Lamp, which consists of a stunning black quartz base paired with a simple shade. Its sculptural qualities will ensure that it attracts attention even when not in use, so set it on a simple monochrome console and let it shine.

Tips for job-seekers
  • Do not submit your application through the Easy Apply button on LinkedIn. Employers receive between 600 and 800 replies for each job advert on the platform. If you are the right fit for a job, connect to a relevant person in the company on LinkedIn and send them a direct message.
  • Make sure you are an exact fit for the job advertised. If you are an HR manager with five years’ experience in retail and the job requires a similar candidate with five years’ experience in consumer, you should apply. But if you have no experience in HR, do not apply for the job.
