Singer Sami Yusuf and artist eL Seed are two of the names taking part in a series of new online performances.
Launched by the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (Admaf), the organisation behind this year's postponed Abu Dhabi Festival, the online series of events will take place during Ramadan.
Running from Tuesday, May 5 until Wednesday, May 13, the series will feature events streamed live on Facebook and Instagram, covering a range of disciplines including Islamic spiritual music, opera and performance art.
Running as part of Admaf's Culture is Humanity, in Solidarity, digital campaign, the organisation's founder, Huda Ibrahim Alkhamis, says the series aims to highlight the important role that art and culture can play during uncertain times.
"Culture is the beating heart of human existence. It has always played a vital role in the development of civilisations and individuals alike in a common human language, an avenue of understanding and an invitation for dialogue." she says.
“In the midst of the current pandemic, as many things have changed, this does not mean that we cannot still experience culture and the arts, engage in the exchanges that foster diversity and openness toward others, or observe the religious traditions that are part of who we are.”
As the curator of the inaugural series, Alkhamis says the artists chosen all have a body of work that exemplifies the key qualities of the holy month.
“Our first ever Ramadan series takes its inspiration from the spirit of this blessed month, to come together as one, at a time when we need it most,” she says.
“These performances, so full of beauty, inspiration and creativity, offer solidarity in the shared experience of what it means to be human.”

Tuesday, May 5, and Monday, May 11: Hiba Al Kawas (10pm on Admaf's Facebook Page)
The Lebanese soprano and composer is regionally acclaimed for her deft merging of western classical music with traditional Middle Eastern melodies.
As a concert artist she is in demand, having performed with the likes of the City of London Sinfonia orchestra and Amsterdam's Nieuw Ensemble. She also shared the stage with Spanish tenor Jose Carreras in Dubai, as part of the second anniversary of the Dubai International Financial Centre in 2006.
As a composer, she has had more than 20 of pieces performed by the prestigious Bolshoi State Theatre Symphony Orchestra, the Lebanese National Symphony Orchestra and the Dnipropetrovsk Symphony Orchestra-Ukraine
Thursday, May 7: eL Seed and Diaa Allam (9.30pm on El Seed’s Instagram account)
French-Tunisian street artist eL Seed teams up with Emirati artist Diaa Allam for what will exciting piece of performance art. Titled This Too Shall Pass, the dynamic duo will channel the thoughts and feelings shared by social media followers on the live feed into impromptu works of art using various disciplines ranging from paint to street art.
The aim of the piece is to provide an avenue to give voice to the anguish and uncertainty we all feel at this present moment.
Saturday, May 9: Sheikh Mahmoud El Tohamy (9.30pm on Admaf's Facebook Page)
If you weren't able to attend NYU Abu Dhabi Arts Centre's Sufism vs Modernism concert last May, then you don't want to miss this.
Similar to that event, the magnificent Egyptian devotional singer Sheikh Mahmoud El Tohamy will perform a range of stirring prayers and poems from Islam’s Sufi tradition paired to traditional and western-style compositions. It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand the words or the significance of the pieces, as El Tohamy’s aim has always been to move you.
Wednesday, May 13: Sami Yusuf (9.30pm on Admaf's Facebook Page)
Dubbed "Islam's biggest rock star", the award-winning British songwriter and instrumentalist will conclude the Ramadan series with a bespoke concert titled Journey of Solidarity. The intimate set will feature pieces inspired by both Islamic history and spirituality, such as Hasbi Rabbi, Meditation, You Came to Me and the soaring The 99 Names.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

The rules on fostering in the UAE
A foster couple or family must:
- be Muslim, Emirati and be residing in the UAE
- not be younger than 25 years old
- not have been convicted of offences or crimes involving moral turpitude
- be free of infectious diseases or psychological and mental disorders
- have the ability to support its members and the foster child financially
- undertake to treat and raise the child in a proper manner and take care of his or her health and well-being

How Tesla’s price correction has hit fund managers
Investing in disruptive technology can be a bumpy ride, as investors in Tesla were reminded on Friday, when its stock dropped 7.5 per cent in early trading to $575.
It recovered slightly but still ended the week 15 per cent lower and is down a third from its all-time high of $883 on January 26. The electric car maker’s market cap fell from $834 billion to about $567bn in that time, a drop of an astonishing $267bn, and a blow for those who bought Tesla stock late.
The collapse also hit fund managers that have gone big on Tesla, notably the UK-based Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust and Cathie Wood’s ARK Innovation ETF.
Tesla is the top holding in both funds, making up a hefty 10 per cent of total assets under management. Both funds have fallen by a quarter in the past month.
Matt Weller, global head of market research at GAIN Capital, recently warned that Tesla founder Elon Musk had “flown a bit too close to the sun”, after getting carried away by investing $1.5bn of the company’s money in Bitcoin.
He also predicted Tesla’s sales could struggle as traditional auto manufacturers ramp up electric car production, destroying its first mover advantage.
AJ Bell’s Russ Mould warns that many investors buy tech stocks when earnings forecasts are rising, almost regardless of valuation. “When it works, it really works. But when it goes wrong, elevated valuations leave little or no downside protection.”
A Tesla correction was probably baked in after last year’s astonishing share price surge, and many investors will see this as an opportunity to load up at a reduced price.
Dramatic swings are to be expected when investing in disruptive technology, as Ms Wood at ARK makes clear.
Every week, she sends subscribers a commentary listing “stocks in our strategies that have appreciated or dropped more than 15 per cent in a day” during the week.
Her latest commentary, issued on Friday, showed seven stocks displaying extreme volatility, led by ExOne, a leader in binder jetting 3D printing technology. It jumped 24 per cent, boosted by news that fellow 3D printing specialist Stratasys had beaten fourth-quarter revenues and earnings expectations, seen as good news for the sector.
By contrast, computational drug and material discovery company Schrödinger fell 27 per cent after quarterly and full-year results showed its core software sales and drug development pipeline slowing.
Despite that setback, Ms Wood remains positive, arguing that its “medicinal chemistry platform offers a powerful and unique view into chemical space”.
In her weekly video view, she remains bullish, stating that: “We are on the right side of change, and disruptive innovation is going to deliver exponential growth trajectories for many of our companies, in fact, most of them.”
Ms Wood remains committed to Tesla as she expects global electric car sales to compound at an average annual rate of 82 per cent for the next five years.
She said these are so “enormous that some people find them unbelievable”, and argues that this scepticism, especially among institutional investors, “festers” and creates a great opportunity for ARK.

Picture of Joumblatt and Hariri breaking bread sets Twitter alight
Mr Joumblatt’s pessimism regarding the Lebanese political situation didn’t stop him from enjoying a cheerful dinner on Tuesday with several politicians including Mr Hariri.
Caretaker Culture Minister Ghattas Khoury tweeted a picture of the group sitting around a table at a discrete fish restaurant in Beirut’s upscale Sodeco area.
Mr Joumblatt told The National that the fish served at Kelly’s Fish lounge had been very good.
“They really enjoyed their time”, remembers the restaurant owner. “Mr Hariri was taking selfies with everybody”.
Mr Hariri and Mr Joumblatt often have dinner together to discuss recent political developments.
Mr Joumblatt was a close ally of Mr Hariri’s assassinated father, former prime minister Rafik Hariri. The pair were leading figures in the political grouping against the 15-year Syrian occupation of Lebanon that ended after mass protests in 2005 in the wake of Rafik Hariri’s murder. After the younger Hariri took over his father’s mantle in 2004, the relationship with Mr Joumblatt endured.
However, the pair have not always been so close. In the run-up to the election last year, Messrs Hariri and Joumblatt went months without speaking over an argument regarding the new proportional electoral law to be used for the first time. Mr Joumblatt worried that a proportional system, which Mr Hariri backed, would see the influence of his small sect diminished.
With so much of Lebanese politics agreed in late-night meetings behind closed doors, the media and pundits put significant weight on how regularly, where and with who senior politicians meet.
In the picture, alongside Messrs Khoury and Hariri were Mr Joumbatt and his wife Nora, PSP politician Wael Abou Faour and Egyptian ambassador to Lebanon Nazih el Nagari.
The picture of the dinner led to a flurry of excitement on Twitter that it signified an imminent government formation. “God willing, white smoke will rise soon and Walid Beik [a nickname for Walid Joumblatt] will accept to give up the minister of industry”, one user replied to the tweet. “Blessings to you…We would like you to form a cabinet”, wrote another.
The next few days will be crucial in determining whether these wishes come true.
