Our top three international exhibitions: Sotheby’s Russian art sales and more

The winter meeting point for the art world

More than 70,000 people are drawn to Miami Beach every year, for what the organisers say is the favourite winter meeting place for the art world. Along with 250 of the world's leading galleries, Art Basel in Miami Beach brings together artists, collectors and curators. This year, the fair has nine sectors showing work from masters to emerging artists, featuring works by Pedro Reyes, Oscar Muñoz and Shinro Ohtake. There also will be performances on local beaches, merging art with the local landscapes. Art Basel in Miami Beach runs from December 4 to 7. Visit www.artbasel.com/miami-beach for more information.

Bid for a classic as Sotheby’s goes Russia mad

For aficionados of Russian art, Sotheby's is the auction house to watch this week. On Monday, it will hold an auction of stunning colour works by artists including Konstantin Makovsky, Nikolai Roerich and Ivan Aivazovsky. The following day, a number of sales relating to the country will take place. One of the highlights is a sale of Russian artworks, Fabergé and icons. The items provide insight into four centuries of Russian history and reveal the region's unique contribution to the arts across glass, porcelain, metalwork and jewellery. Explore the life of a printmaker extraordinaire

One of the most popular of English artists, William Blake remains one of the least understood. This landmark exhibition in the United Kingdom brings together more than 90 of Blake's most acclaimed works, showing his extraordinary technical innovations, especially in printmaking and the illuminated book. His works also inspired younger artists, such as Samuel Palmer, George Richmond and Edward Calvert, known as the Ancients. William Blake: Apprentice and Master runs at the Ashmolean in Oxford from December 4 to March 1. For more information, visit www.ashmolean.org.

Need to know

The flights: Flydubai flies from Dubai to Kilimanjaro airport via Dar es Salaam from Dh1,619 return including taxes. The trip takes 8 hours.

The trek: Make sure that whatever tour company you select to climb Kilimanjaro, that it is a reputable one. The way to climb successfully would be with experienced guides and porters, from a company committed to quality, safety and an ethical approach to the mountain and its staff. Sonia Nazareth booked a VIP package through Safari Africa. The tour works out to $4,775 (Dh17,538) per person, based on a 4-person booking scheme, for 9 nights on the mountain (including one night before and after the trek at Arusha). The price includes all meals, a head guide, an assistant guide for every 2 trekkers, porters to carry the luggage, a cook and kitchen staff, a dining and mess tent, a sleeping tent set up for 2 persons, a chemical toilet and park entrance fees. The tiny ration of heated water provided for our bath in our makeshift private bathroom stall was the greatest luxury. A standard package, also based on a 4-person booking, works out to $3,050 (Dh11,202) per person.

When to go: You can climb Kili at any time of year, but the best months to ascend  are  January-February and September-October.  Also good are July and August, if you’re tolerant of the colder weather that winter brings.

Do not underestimate the importance of kit. Even if you’re travelling at a relatively pleasant time, be geared up for the cold and the rain.

Real estate tokenisation project

Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.

The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.

Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
