Obama mocks at White House dinner

Kim Kardashian, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were targets for Barack Obama's scattershot humour at Saturday night's celebrity-studded White House Correspondents Dinner.

Even the entrance to the US president's speech was part of his schtick. Obama walked offstage just before he took the podium with an alleged "hot mic", making fun of getting caught last month on an open microphone with the Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.

"What am I doing here?" he asks offstage. "I'm opening for Jimmy Kimmel and telling knock-knock jokes to Kim Kardashian."

Once on stage, Obama revisited last year's dinner, which took place as Osama bin Laden was captured and killed.

"Last year, at this time, we finally delivered justice to one of the world's most notorious individuals," Obama said. Then a picture of the real estate mogul Trump appeared on the room's TV monitors.

Obama also recalled his tough primary fight with Clinton, now his secretary of state. "She can't stop drunk texting me from Cartagena," he said, referring to their recent trip to the Summit of the Americas in Colombia, where Clinton was photographed drinking and dancing.

Among the Hollywood stars at the dinner were Lindsay Lohan, the cast of the TV show Modern Family, George Clooney and Steven Spielberg.

Paltrow talks postnatal depression

Gwyneth Paltrow opened up about suffering from postnatal depression, after giving birth to her son Moses in 2006, on Thursday's premiere episode of Lifetime's new series The Conversation, hosted by Amanda de Cadenet.

"I couldn't connect with my son the way that I had with my daughter [Apple, now seven] and I couldn't understand why. I couldn't connect to anyone. I felt like a zombie," US Weekly quoted the actress from the interview.

"We think that it makes us bad mothers or we didn't do it right, but it's like, we're all in this together," said Paltrow, who believes "you never totally get rid of it", but being open about her struggle made her cope more easily.

"That's why I talk about it, because even the awareness of it started to diminish it," she said.

Gauri Khan to design penthouses

Shah Rukh Khan's wife and the film producer Gauri Khan have been roped in by the prominent Kolte Patil Developers to design riverfront luxury penthouses in Pune, the software city near Mumbai.

Khan has visited the site and says she will work closely with owners in designing their homes. A trained graphic designer and a Delhi School of Art graduate, Khan rediscovered her passion for interior design when SRK purchased Mannat, a heritage bungalow in Bandra. She worked closely with the architect to design the space, now a popular tourist landmark.

Five-Year Engagement not early hit

Jason Segel's latest project The Five-Year Engagement received a lukewarm reaction from critics, with most reviews pointing out the film's dragging pace and lengthy running time.

The film has also stumbled in the box office, earning barely US$10 million (Dh37m) on its opening weekend, according to Deadline.

Written by Segel and co-starring Emily Blunt, the film is set to open in the UAE next week.

Nobel laureate opens book museum

The Turkish Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk inaugurated a museum based on his 2008 oeuvre The Museum of Innocence on Friday, about an obsessive man who collects things to remind him of his lover and soothe the pain of a doomed affair.

The story, which takes place in Istanbul between 1975 and the present, focuses on the wealthy businessman Kemal Bey, who harbours a 30-year passion for the impoverished Fusun, a distant cousin and shop assistant, who becomes his mistress.

The 59-year-old Pamuk said his museum in the working-class district of Cukurcuma was aimed at reigniting the sentiments one felt while reading the book and not an "illustration" of it.

"The novel is not an explanation of the museum. They are deeply intertwined," he said.

The museum has 23 display cases, each representing a chapter of the book.

Madhuri Dixit to play gangster

The Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit is all set to enthral audiences after her return from the US, after signing on to a film project that will see her essay the role of a gang leader.

Anubhav Sinha, the director of Ra.One, confirmed he has signed Dixit to play the lead role of Gulab in his forthcoming production Gulab Gang, about a mob of six women fighting social injustice.

Dixit has also joined acclaimed director Vishal Bhardwaj's new film Dedh Ishqiya.
