This week sees the opening of Crossroads #6 - Legends of Street Art, a new show of artwork at the Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi. Among the works on display are pieces by need-no-description legends, such as Banksy and Shepard Fairey, plus local figures such as Saif B. Chilmiran. And then there's Mr Brainwash. Now, anyone who has watched Banksy and Shepard Fairey's rather awesome documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop will recognise Mr Brainwash as the film's main character. The pseudonym for Thierry Guetta, Mr Brainwash is an 'artist' whose actions in the film follow a fairly ridiculous path. Basically starting out as Banksy's unofficial video biographer, he gives this up (mainly because the film he produced was so awful) to go out on his own, copying the various styles he has been recording, and producing works largely through "scanning and photo-shopping" (his words), that are often done by hired help. Needless to say, Banksy is not impressed. So ludicrous did Mr Brainwash become in the film that many out there - myself included - believed him to be nothing more than a hilarious creation of Banksy, made to create a 'mockumentary' that was heavy in farce. While Exit Through The Gift Shop was praised, critics the world over labelled it fiction. However, despite such allegations, it seems Thierry Guetta - and indeed Mr Brainwash - is real. It was actually the documentary master Morgan Spurlock who pointed this out to us. Last year Spurlock hosted the show '50 Documentaries See Before You Die' on current TV, during which he visited the main figures from films in the list, of which one was Exit Through The Gift Shop (number 21). We spoke to Morgan at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival last year and asked if, really, truthfully, honestly, Mr Brainwash was real. "He actually does exist and he's not Banksy - he's a real person unto himself, separate from Banksy." There you have it. To see some of the 100% real work by this 100% real artist, head to the Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi on Yas Island between 10am and 10pm. The show runs from May 9 to June 10.
