Avicii tops UK chart with fastest selling single of 2013
The Swedish artist Avicii hit the top of the British singles chart on Sunday with Wake Me Up, which became the fastest selling single of the year, the Official Charts Company said. The track by the 23-year-old DJ, whose real name is Tim Bergling, sold nearly 267,000 copies to dislodge Robin Thicke from the top spot. Although he lost out in the singles chart, Thicke's Blurred Lines entered the album chart at No 1, pushing Jay-Z's Magna Carta... Holy Grail into second place. Eega triumphs at Filmfare Awards
The drama Eega came out triumphant at the 60th Filmfare Awards for India's southern industry, held on Saturday. Filipino director leads Locarno jury
The Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz has been appointed as the president of the jury of the 66th Locarno International Film Festival. J Cole apologises for autism lyric
The rapper J Cole is apologising to those with autism and their families for an offensive lyric. Cole says in a blog post that he doesn't agree with the recent trend of rappers facing pressure to apologise when they step over a perceived line, but in this case he feels he went too far in a verse he contributed to Drake's track Jodeci Freestyle. "To all those overcoming autism. You deserve medals, not disrespect. I hope you accept my sincere apology," Cole wrote. In Drake's song, Cole raps that he's "artistic" while his rivals are "autistic, retarded". "I was instantly embarrassed that I would be ignorant enough say something so hurtful," Cole wrote. Ziina users will be able to use the app to help relief efforts in Beirut, which has been left reeling after an August blast caused an estimated $15 billion in damage and left thousands homeless. Ziina has partnered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to raise money for the Lebanese capital, co-founder Faisal Toukan says. “As of October 1, the UNHCR has the first certified badge on Ziina and is automatically part of user's top friends' list during this campaign. What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
